Mohammad Shami may return to the Indian team for ODIs vs New Zealand. BCCI monitoring fitness; could replace resting Jasprit Bumrah.

Mohammad Shami, a seasoned Indian fast bowler, may soon return to the national team.

Shami, who last played for the Men in Blue during their successful ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, has suffered from an injury, a dismal IPL season, and a protracted rejection by the Indian squad across all formats.

He might, however, return in the next India vs. New Zealand ODI series, which begins a few days into the new year, according to an report.

A Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source stated that Mohammad Shami is “looking good for the New Zealand One-Day Series” and that his domestic performances are being watched, according to the report.

“There is frequent discussion on Muhammad Shami. He is still relevant. His fitness is the only thing that worries me. He is the kind of bowler who will take wickets. Saying that he is no longer on the radar for selection is incorrect. He appears healthy for the One-Day series in New Zealand. Given his experience and ability to take wickets whenever he wants, don’t be shocked if he is selected. Even the World Cup in 2027 could happen.

In addition to representing Bengal in the just finished Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy T20 tournament, Shami is currently competing for Bengal in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, a 50-over domestic competition.

As part of his workload management, Jasprit Bumrah is rumored to be rested for the IND vs. NZ ODI series. If that turns out to be the case, Shami may be an ideal fit.

Shami’s eventual return to the Indian team is still up in the air as the BCCI has not yet revealed the squad for these games.
