London, 31st March 2025:
Karun Nair has made a strong return to Test cricket by scoring an unbeaten 52 on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test between India and England at The Oval. This half-century comes almost nine years after his remarkable 303*. After struggling with inconsistency in the first three Tests of the series, Nair finally found his rhythm. It is also his first international fifty since 2016.

Back in Blue, Back in Form

Nair entered the game with India struggling to establish a solid foundation. He showed great patience and control against England’s strong bowling attack. The pitch presented seam and swing early on, leading to regular wickets. Despite the pressure, Nair steadied the innings, contributing crucial runs with the lower order.

He ended the day on 52*, helping India reach 204/6 at stumps. This is a respectable total considering the conditions and early setbacks.

Dinesh Karthik’s Praise: “Career Is Back”

Veteran wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Karthik, who was commentating, highlighted Nair’s innings as a key moment. “Karun Nair’s career is well and truly back,” Karthik said, praising the composure and quality of the innings. He pointed out that this performance could secure Nair’s place in the team for good.

A Second Chapter Begins

Nair’s last game for India before this tour was in 2017, and he had since been on the edge of selection. With this gritty half-century in high-pressure conditions, the 33-year-old has made a strong case for himself as India seeks to rebuild and test their bench strength.

His performance could be crucial not only for the match but also in shaping the team’s middle-order strategy for future overseas tours.

What to Expect on Day 2

With India at 204/6 overnight, Day 2 will be crucial for setting the tone for the series decider. England, missing key players like Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, fielded an inexperienced attack on a green pitch. India also lacks Jasprit Bumrah and Rishabh Pant, which puts pressure on their bowlers to get early breakthroughs. As the match progresses, Shubman Gill will aim to avoid his first series defeat as captain and stop India from suffering its third consecutive Test series loss.
