Mumbai: The IPL Impact Player rule has once again come under scrutiny, with most team captains reportedly expressing dissatisfaction during a recent meeting held in Mumbai. The debate around the rule, introduced in 2023, continues to divide opinions across the cricketing fraternity.
Despite the widespread concerns, the Board of Control for Cricket in India has already extended the IPL Impact Player rule until the 2027 season, making it clear that no immediate changes are expected.
Captains Voice Concerns Over Team Balance
During the meeting, captains from all 10 franchises shared their feedback on the IPL Impact Player rule, highlighting its impact on team composition and player roles. Prominent cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Axar Patel have openly criticized the rule.
Axar Patel pointed out that teams are increasingly preferring specialist players over all-rounders, which disrupts the balance of the game. Rohit Sharma had earlier warned that the IPL Impact Player rule could negatively affect the development of all-rounders in Indian cricket.

All-Rounders Feel the Pressure
Echoing similar concerns, Hardik Pandya stated that the rule has increased pressure on all-rounders, who are now expected to deliver equally with both bat and ball to secure their place in the playing XI.
Overseas players such as Glenn Phillips have also raised concerns, suggesting that the IPL Impact Player rule could reduce the global pool of all-rounders, potentially impacting international formats like T20s and ODIs.
Ball Change Proposal Gets Lukewarm Response
Apart from the IPL Impact Player rule, captains also discussed a proposal to allow a ball change after 10 overs in the first innings. However, the idea failed to gain significant support.
The existing rule—permitting a ball change after 10 overs in the second innings to counter dew—is expected to continue unchanged for the upcoming season.
Training Guidelines Clarified
Captains also sought clarity on newly introduced training regulations for the 2026 season. These include restrictions such as no practice sessions on match days and limitations on sharing practice wickets.
Officials addressed these concerns during the meeting, ensuring teams are well-informed ahead of the new season.
While the IPL Impact Player rule remains in place for now, growing criticism from players and experts suggests the debate is far from over. With the rule set to continue until 2027, its long-term impact on team dynamics and player development will be closely watched in the coming seasons.
