A fresh proposal could see the Indian Premier League expand globally, with the iconic Adelaide Oval being considered as a venue for a match in the IPL 2027 in Australia plan. The initiative is being explored by the South Australian Cricket Association (SACA), aiming to bring the world’s biggest T20 league to Australian soil.
SACA President Will Rayner and Adelaide Oval Chairman Jamie Briggs have reportedly engaged multiple stakeholders to discuss the possibility of hosting an IPL fixture.
IPL 2027 in Australia: Cricket Australia–Board of Control for Cricket in India Talks Hint at BBL Exchange Deal
The idea of IPL 2027 in Australia follows ongoing discussions between Cricket Australia (CA) and the Board of Control for Cricket in India. Earlier this year, CA proposed hosting the opening match of the 2026–27 Big Bash League in Chennai, suggesting a potential exchange arrangement between the two boards.
This concept is being seen as a mutually beneficial move to strengthen ties between the IPL and the Big Bash League. Although the BCCI has not yet received formal communication, talks around IPL 2027 in Australia are expected to progress in the coming months.
Discussions Gain Momentum Among Stakeholders
The proposal for IPL 2027 in Australia was also reportedly discussed with CA CEO Todd Greenberg during the 2025–26 Sheffield Shield final held in Adelaide.

The IPL has previously been staged outside India, including a full season in South Africa in 2009, and editions in the United Arab Emirates in 2020 and partially in 2021. This history strengthens the feasibility of expanding the tournament’s footprint further.
Adelaide Oval’s Rising Global Status
Adelaide Oval has been steadily growing as a global cricket destination. The venue is set to host the final of the ICC T20 World Cup 2028, jointly organised by Cricket Australia and New Zealand Cricket.
With a seating capacity of over 53,000, Adelaide Oval could attract massive crowds if the IPL 2027 in Australia plan materialises. Interest would be particularly high if popular teams like Chennai Super Kings or Royal Challengers Bengaluru feature, especially with global stars like Virat Kohli, who has an impressive record at the venue.
The possibility of IPL 2027 in Australia marks an exciting step toward the global expansion of the Indian Premier League. While still in discussion stages, the proposal reflects growing collaboration between cricketing bodies and the league’s increasing international appeal.
If approved, this move could open the door for more overseas IPL matches in the future, taking the tournament to a truly global audience.
