Indian women’s cricket team wins their first ICC World Cup, defeating South Africa by 52 runs. Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma star in historic triumph.
In a historic moment for Indian cricket, the national women’s team won their first-ever ICC Women’s World Cup trophy after beating South Africa by 52 runs in a thrilling final at the DY Patil Stadium on Sunday night. As BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia announced a Rs 51 crore award for the players and support staff, celebrations broke out all throughout the country. He called the win a “monumental achievement that will take Indian women’s cricket to a new level.”
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal praised the team’s historic achievement, comparing it to India’s famous men’s World Cup win in 1983.
“It’s a big day for Indian women’s cricket. The Indian women’s team has done what the men’s squad did in 1983 in Mumbai. “This historic win will be a huge boost for women’s cricket in the country, and I’m sure our game will reach new heights,” Dhumal told IANS.
Earlier, India batted first and scored an impressive 298 runs for 7 wickets, thanks to Shafali Verma’s fluent 87, Deepti Sharma’s steady 58, and important contributions from Smriti Mandhana (45) and Richa Ghosh (34). Mandhana and Verma put up a strong 100-run opening stand that set the stage for a huge total. South Africa fought back late to hold India just under 300.

South Africa started off well in their chase of 299, with Tazmin Brits and Laura Wolvaardt putting together a quick fifty-run opening partnership. A fast direct hit from Amanjot Kaur, on the other hand, ended Brits’ stay, and from then, India took charge of the match.
In her first over, young bowler Sree Charani got Anneke Bosch out LBW. Then, Shafali Verma, who was also doing well with the ball, took out Sune Luus and Marizanne Kapp in short succession, changing the course of the game.
Deepti Sharma then had a great game, taking 5 for 39 to destroy South Africa’s middle order. Even though Wolvaardt fought hard for 101 runs, the Proteas fell short, getting out for 246 runs in 45.3 overs. India won by 52 runs in front of a loud home crowd.
The moment was not only a World Cup win, but also the start of a new era for Indian women’s cricket. The players hugged one other and cried tears of delight as the tricolor flew high.
