Indian Cricket 2026: Veteran Players Who May Announce Retirement This Year

Ishant Sharma: The Veteran Fast Bowler’s Journey and Possible Farewell

by Desk

Veteran Indian cricketers Ishant Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, and Yuzvendra Chahal could retire in 2026 amid age, competition, and limited national opportunities.

Several prominent Indian cricketers have been away from the national team for a significant period, and for many, returning to the international fold seems increasingly unlikely.

While younger players still have opportunities to revive their international careers through consistent performances in domestic tournaments and franchise leagues, the same cannot be said for those nearing the end of their playing days.

Factors such as age, intense competition, and evolving team combinations have pushed some familiar names to the periphery of Indian cricket. As 2026 unfolds, here’s a look at three Indian cricketers who could potentially announce their retirement this year.

1) Ishant Sharma

Veteran pacer Ishant Sharma has been a cornerstone of India’s Test bowling attack for over a decade. Making his debut in 2007 as a teenager, Ishant has enjoyed a long and demanding international career.

However, his last appearance for India came in 2021, and the rise of a younger, faster pace attack has further diminished his chances of a recall.

At 37, Ishant has already achieved remarkable milestones, including 311 Test wickets, 115 ODI wickets, and 8 T20I wickets. With no international comeback on the horizon, 2026 could well mark the end of his illustrious international career.

2) Ajinkya Rahane

Ajinkya Rahane has been a significant figure in Indian cricket, especially in Test matches. A former captain and a key contributor to India’s overseas Test victories, Rahane will turn 38 in June 2026.

Despite performing consistently for Mumbai in domestic cricket, his chances of returning to the national side remain slim, with younger batsmen firmly in contention.

Rahane has represented India in 85 Tests, 90 ODIs, and 20 T20Is, but with selectors prioritizing youth, retirement from international cricket appears increasingly likely this year.

3) Yuzvendra Chahal

Once India’s premier leg-spinner in white-ball cricket, Yuzvendra Chahal’s international career has stalled in recent years.

Although he was part of India’s 2024 T20 World Cup-winning squad, he has not played an international match since 2023.

With limited opportunities and a crowded spin department, Chahal’s chances of returning to the national team seem slim. He may consider stepping away from international cricket while continuing to participate in franchise leagues.
