Birmingham, July 31, 2025:
In a strong and emotional choice, the India Champions have withdrawn from the much-anticipated World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 semifinal against their rivals, the Pakistan Champions. They cited national pride and recent tensions tied to terrorism. This bold move automatically sends Pakistan to the tournament final.
Led by Yuvraj Singh, the Indian veteran team stood together in their decision to forfeit the match. They declared that playing Pakistan during ongoing geopolitical strain would betray the feelings of their country. “We will never let our country down,” said Yuvraj, reflecting the sentiments of the entire team.
Why India Champions Withdrew
The withdrawal follows rising public and political pressure after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam earlier this year. Several players, including Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, and Yusuf Pathan, had made their position clear before the semifinals; they refused to play against Pakistan regardless of the consequences.
Their choice was rooted in a sense of duty to national unity. They stated that representing India in a match against Pakistan, especially in a non-official tournament like WCL, would disrespect the sacrifices made by the country.
Pakistan Champions March into the Final
With India’s second consecutive refusal to play Pakistan in this tournament—first in the group stage and now in the knockout round-Pakistan Champions have automatically qualified for the WCL 2025 Final.
While Pakistan’s players were willing to compete and expressed disappointment at the cancellation, the WCL committee confirmed that Pakistan would advance directly to the final due to India’s withdrawal. According to tournament rules, the team present on the field is awarded a walkover in case of a withdrawal by the opponent in the knockout stage.
- Pakistan will now face the winner of the other semifinal between Australia Champions and South Africa Champions.
Political Overtones in a Cricketing Arena
This incident has rekindled the ongoing debate over sports ties between India and Pakistan amid cross-border tensions. Though WCL is not governed by the ICC and involves retired players, the emotions and stakes remain high in an Indo-Pak match-especially when patriotism takes priority over sport.
Many fans have backed the Indian team’s decision, praising them for putting national honor above winning trophies. However, some have also voiced disappointment at missing out on what could have been an exciting cricket match.
