Bengaluru: The 2026 Indian Premier League season is set to begin on March 28 with a high-voltage clash between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. However, the traditional IPL 2026 opening ceremony has been cancelled as a mark of respect for the 11 lives lost in a stampede following Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first IPL title win on June 4, 2025.
Devajit Saikia, Secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), confirmed the decision in a statement to Times of India: “Due to last year’s tragic incident on June 4, there will be no formal function on the day of the start of IPL 2026 in Bengaluru. The BCCI is not organizing any cultural or entertainment show at the start of IPL-19 as a mark of respect to the departed souls.”
A Grand Closing Ceremony Planned
While the IPL 2026 opening ceremony will not take place, the BCCI and the IPL Governing Council are planning a grand entertainment spectacle for the closing day on May 31. Fans can expect a star-studded show to celebrate the culmination of the 2026 season, making the final match a memorable event.

Historical Precedent for Cancelling Opening Ceremonies
This is not the first instance where the IPL 2026 opening ceremony (or IPL in general) was cancelled due to tragedy. In 2019, the opening function was called off following the Pulwama attack, with funds redirected to the families of martyred CRPF soldiers. Such decisions reflect the league’s sensitivity toward national tragedies and its commitment to honoring victims.
Upcoming Match Schedule
The detailed schedule for the remaining IPL 2026 matches will be announced shortly. Fans can look forward to a full season of competitive cricket, but without the traditional fanfare associated with the opening day, as the league pays tribute to those affected by last year’s tragedy.
The cancellation of the IPL 2026 opening ceremony underscores the league’s respect for the victims of the Bengaluru stampede. While fans will miss the usual glitz and glamor, the season promises intense cricketing action, culminating in a grand finale on May 31.
