Ayush Badoni called up to replace injured Washington Sundar for India vs New Zealand ODI series. IPL and domestic stats highlighted.

Washington Sundar is a vital member of the Indian team in all formats because of his ability to contribute greatly with both the bat and the ball.

Unfortunately, an injury he sustained in the first game of the IND vs. NZ ODI series—which the Men in Blue won by four wickets—has kept him out of action.

Ayush Badoni was unexpectedly selected by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to succeed Sundar, which is an interesting development.

Examining the Stats of Ayush Badoni

In the domestic cricket circuit in India, Ayush Badoni is a member of Delhi. He has really served as the state team’s captain on a few times, such as during the Ranji Trophy competition.

Badoni has amassed 1,681 runs and 22 wickets in 21 First Class cricket matches. Regarding List A cricket, he has amassed 18 wickets and 693 runs in 27 games.

Because he bowls right arm off-break, Ayush Badoni demonstrates his versatility and is a good replacement for Washington Sundar, who is also an all-round spin bowler.

Significantly, the 26-year-old has demonstrated his abilities in the IPL while representing the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG). Under the direction of Gautam Gambhir, who is currently India’s head coach across all formats, he was acquired by the team for their inaugural season (2022).

Badoni, who bats for the team in the middle/lower-middle order position, has scored 963 runs in 56 IPL games. This position is comparable to Sundar’s in the Indian squad.

However, with just 35 deliveries bowled and 4 wickets taken thus far in the league, he hasn’t had many opportunities with the ball.

When Is India vs. New Zealand’s Next ODI?

The next IND vs. NZ ODI is set for January 14, 2026, and Ayush Badoni will travel to Rajkot to join the Indian team.

The young player’s inclusion in the Men in Blue’s starting lineup is still up in the air, though.

Notably, Tilak Varma appears to be doubtful for the T20 World Cup as well because of his own recent injury. As a result, Badoni may be tested for the tournament that begins next month with this call-up.
