India’s explosive opener Abhishek Sharma is in a race against time to recover from a severe health setback that required hospitalization in New Delhi. The 25-year-old, who was in top form leading up to the 2026 T20 World Cup, is expected to miss India’s Group A match against Namibia on February 12.
Health Crisis and Hospitalization
Abhishek Sharma troubles began on February 6 after a net session at Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Reports indicate he consumed something in the city that triggered a severe stomach infection. Despite feeling unwell, he played in India’s tournament opener against the USA on February 7, where he was dismissed for a golden duck and was noticeably absent from post-match activities.
The illness worsened upon arrival in Delhi due to a combination of a stomach bug, viral fever, and cooler weather, leading to severe dehydration and drastic weight loss in just a few days. He was admitted to Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on February 10 for scans and medical supervision.

Abhishek Sharma Current Condition and Recovery
Abhishek Sharma was discharged on February 11, but is still weak. India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate noted that he “still has a few issues with his tummy.” With the high-profile match against Pakistan on February 15 in Colombo, the team management is unlikely to risk playing him against Namibia. Abhishek has called in his personal trainer to Delhi to work on his strength and stamina.
India’s Plan B
- With Abhishek expected to sit out today’s clash at Arun Jaitley Stadium:
- Sanju Samson is likely to open alongside Ishan Kishan.
- Jasprit Bumrah, who missed the USA game due to fever, has fully recovered and is set to lead the bowling attack.
India management is prioritizing Abhishek Sharma recovery to ensure he is fit for the crucial Pakistan fixture.
