New Delhi: Ganga Dussehra, one of the most significant festivals in Hindu tradition, will be observed on Monday, May 25, 2026. The festival is dedicated to the descent of the sacred river Ganga on Earth and is considered highly auspicious for purification, charity, and spiritual upliftment.
According to the Hindu calendar, Ganga Dussehra is observed on the Dashami Tithi of the Shukla Paksha in the month of Jyeshtha, approximately three days after Ganga Saptami. While Ganga Saptami marks the symbolic rebirth of Goddess Ganga, Ganga Dussehra celebrates her descent to Earth to purify humanity.
The Dashami Tithi begins at 4:30 AM on May 25, 2026, and ends at 5:10 AM on May 26, 2026. As per the Udayatithi (sunrise-based tradition), the festival will be celebrated on May 25.
Auspicious timings for bathing and worship
On Ganga Dussehra, taking a holy dip in sacred rivers, especially the Ganga, is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that bathing in the holy river on this day washes away sins and brings spiritual merit.

Importance of charity on Ganga Dussehra
Donations made on this day are believed to bring great spiritual benefits. Devotees traditionally offer food, clothing, money, and essential items to the needy. It is also considered auspicious to donate garments or offerings to Brahmins, and to provide food and essentials to the underprivileged.
Charity for animals and birds, such as providing grains, fodder, and water, is also considered highly meritorious.
