Indonesian President Prabowo invites Russian President Putin for a state visit after his India trip, strengthening Russia–Indonesia ties in 2026–27.

Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto extended a cordial diplomatic invitation to Russian President Vladimir Putin during discussions in Moscow , implying that India should not be the sole destination on the Russian leader’s travel agenda.

Meeting for the second time this year in Russia, Prabowo commended the “excellent” condition of bilateral relations and extended an invitation for Putin to undertake an official state visit to Indonesia in the forthcoming years.

Referring to the Russian President’s recent visit to India, Prabowo stated, “I would like to take this opportunity to extend an invitation for you to visit Indonesia at your convenience.” It may occur in 2026 or 2027. We would be delighted to welcome you to our country. Because India should not be the sole country you visit,” eliciting amusement from Putin.

The exchange occurred shortly after President Putin’s prominent visit to India, during which he engaged in comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. That voyage was broadly perceived as a significant public indication of the strength of India-Russia relations, especially in light of increased pressure from the United States following US President Donald Trump’s implementation of a substantial 50 percent tariff on Indian imports of Russian oil.

Putin’s visit to India included a comprehensive ceremonial reception, with Prime Minister Modi personally greeting him at Palam Airport, accompanied by a guard of honour and a red-carpet welcome. Discussions concentrated on defense, energy, trade, and broader geopolitical issues, reaffirming the enduring partnership between the two nations amidst changing global alliances.

During discussions with Prime Minister Modi, the Russian president also expressed Moscow’s readiness to sustain energy supplies to India despite increasing external pressures, stating that he was prepared to uphold “uninterrupted shipments” of petroleum.

Back in Moscow, Putin informed Prabowo that Russia was pleased with the progress of military cooperation with Indonesia and was prepared to support Jakarta in the development of nuclear energy. Hosting the Indonesian leader at the Kremlin, Putin also stated his intention to resolve what he characterized as a minor decline in Russian wheat exports to Indonesia this year.

The meeting highlighted Moscow’s efforts to strengthen relations with key countries in the Global South. Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous nation, occupies a significant position in that strategy as Russia persists in managing Western sanctions imposed in response to the conflict in Ukraine.
