India-US Trade Talks: Interim Trade Deal Discussions to Resume in Washington

India will send a delegation to Washington next week to resume crucial trade talks with the US on an interim agreement.

An official delegation from India is set to visit Washington next week to hold crucial India-US trade talks with American authorities, according to a government source. The visit comes at a significant time as both countries move closer to finalising an interim trade agreement framework.

India-US Trade Talks Gain Momentum Amid Tariff Changes

The upcoming India-US trade talks are expected to play a key role in shaping the next phase of bilateral economic relations. Both nations had earlier finalised a framework for the first phase of a trade agreement, which includes tariff adjustments and market access discussions.

However, the agreement has been delayed due to changes in the US tariff environment following a Supreme Court ruling and revised trade policies. The India-US trade talks will now focus on aligning the agreement with the updated global tariff structure.

Interim Trade Agreement Framework Already Finalised

As part of the earlier framework, the United States had agreed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods to around 18%. The India-US trade talks were initially expected to conclude the legal text in March, but the shifting policy landscape in Washington led to a postponement.

Now, both sides are expected to revisit key provisions, especially after the US introduced a temporary 10% tariff across trading partners for 150 days starting February 24.

Section 301 Investigations Add Pressure

The India-US trade talks are also taking place amid ongoing Section 301 investigations launched by the United States Trade Representative (USTR). These probes cover multiple economies, including India, and examine trade practices related to labour standards and industrial policies.

A separate investigation targeting industrial policies of several countries is also underway, further adding complexity to the negotiations.

Earlier Negotiations Postponed

The India-US trade talks were originally scheduled earlier this year but were postponed due to uncertainty in tariff structures and policy changes in the US. Officials now believe the upcoming meeting could help reset timelines for finalising the agreement.

With both countries aiming to strengthen economic ties, the India-US trade talks next week are seen as a crucial step toward finalising the interim trade deal. However, evolving US trade policies and ongoing investigations are expected to influence the pace and outcome of negotiations.
