India urges positive steps to improve ties with China as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri meets CPC leader Sun Haiyan.
India emphasized the importance of taking “positive steps” to create the right climate for repairing ties with China on Wednesday, as Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri visited Sun Haiyan, a senior Communist Party of China (CPC) leader, to discuss initiatives to rebuild relations.
Sun, the vice minister of the CPC’s foreign department, is now visiting India to seek ways to boost bilateral relations.
In recent months, both parties have taken steps to rebuild their ties, which were severely strained by the deadly fighting between Indian and Chinese troops in Galwan Valley in June 2020.
The military standoff was effectively resolved in October 2024.
In the meeting, Misri emphasised the importance of increasing understanding between the peoples of the two countries in order to rebuild ties, emphasizing the need to “take positive steps to create the right environment for improved bilateral relations,” according to a readout from the external affairs ministry.

Misri and Sun discussed progress in stabilizing and rebuilding bilateral ties, with a focus on business and people-centric engagements. They also discussed ways to advance bilateral engagement in 2026. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to implementing their leaders’ directions and normalizing bilateral relations.
In a post on ‘X’, External Affairs Ministry spokeswoman Randhir Jaiswal stated, “Both sides reviewed the positive momentum in bilateral relations and discussed ways to further advance ties by enhancing people-to-people exchanges and addressing concerns on sensitive issues.” The Chinese side thanked India on taking the BRICS chairmanship and voiced strong support for a successful summit, according to the ministry.
