Govt to Release August Salaries Early for Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam

Central employees in Maharashtra and Kerala to get advance pay ahead of major festivals

The central government has approved the early disbursement of August 2025 salaries, wages, and pensions for its employees and pensioners in Maharashtra and Kerala. The move comes in recognition of two major festivals—Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra and Onam in Kerala.

The Finance Ministry announced that salaries and pensions in both states will be credited in advance to ease festive spending. However, the ministry clarified that these payments will be treated as advance disbursals and will later be adjusted against the final settlement for the month.

Why Salaries Are Being Released Early

In an official memorandum, the ministry explained that the early release is a one-time measure to ensure government employees and pensioners can celebrate the festivals without financial strain.

“The salary/wages/pension so disbursed is to be treated as advance payments and will be subject to adjustment after the full month’s salary/wages/pension of each employee/pensioner is determined. The adjustment, if any, will be made without exception from the salary/wages/pension of the month of August 2025,” the circular noted.

This means employees will not receive any additional benefits but simply an advance portion of their regular pay.

Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra

In 2025, Ganesh Chaturthi will be celebrated on August 27. To mark the occasion, the government has directed that salaries for central government employees in Maharashtra be credited a day earlier, on Tuesday, August 26.

The announcement covers staff working in defence, postal services, and telecommunications, among other departments.

“In view of the Ganapati festival, the Government has decided that the salary of all Central Government employees in the State of Maharashtra for the month of August 2025 may be drawn and disbursed by the Central Government offices (including Defence, Posts & Telecommunications) on August 26, 2025,” the finance ministry stated.

This step is expected to benefit thousands of employees who traditionally spend heavily on religious offerings, decorations, and celebrations during Ganesh Chaturthi.

Onam in Kerala

According to the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar, Onam in 2025 will be observed on September 4 and 5. To allow employees to prepare in advance, the central government has directed that August salaries in Kerala be released on Monday, August 25.

The advance disbursal applies to government employees across defence, posts, telecommunications, and industrial sectors.

“In view of the Onam festival, the Government has decided that the salary/wages/pension of all Central Government employees in the State of Kerala may be drawn and disbursed by the Central Government offices on August 25, 2025,” the ministry noted in a memorandum dated August 21.

The circular also directed that the wages of central government industrial employees in Kerala be released on the same date.

RBI and Banks Instructed

The Finance Ministry has further asked the Reserve Bank of India to ensure that all paying branches in Maharashtra and Kerala are informed of the decision. This is intended to prevent delays in crediting the salaries and pensions to employees’ bank accounts.

The coordination between government offices and banks is crucial, as timely payment will help employees meet festive expenses for travel, shopping, and traditional rituals.

Broader Impact

Both Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam are celebrated with large-scale community events, feasts, and cultural performances. The early salary release is likely to boost local spending and provide a small push to the regional economy.

By ensuring employees have funds before the festivals, the central government has also signaled sensitivity to cultural traditions while maintaining financial discipline through the adjustment clause.
