BARPETA, ASSAM — In a significant breakthrough for regional security, the Assam Police Special Task Force (STF) apprehended two suspected jihadis Terror Module in Barpeta district on the night of March 10, 2026. The operation, conducted in the Sorbhog police station area, successfully dismantled a burgeoning sleeper cell allegedly linked to international fundamentalist organizations.
Midnight Raid Uncovers International Links
Acting on specific intelligence provided by central agencies, the STF carried out a coordinated midnight strike alongside local police units. The two arrested individuals were reportedly found in possession of incriminating materials, including Pakistani SIM cards and digital devices. These items suggest a high degree of cross-border coordination.
A senior officer at the Assam Police headquarters confirmed the arrests. He stated that the suspects are currently undergoing rigorous interrogation at the STF office in Rupnagar. While officials have not yet released the names of the detainees, they emphasized that the raid was part of a larger strategy to neutralize extremist influence in the Northeast.
Regional Crackdown on “Imam Mahmuder Kafila”
This latest operation follows a series of high-profile arrests that occurred in late 2025. In December, security agencies busted a major module of the Imam Mahmuder Kafila (IMK). This group is an offshoot of the banned Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) and maintains ties with Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS).
The IMK module, reportedly led by a Barpeta-based operative, has been accused of attempting to destabilize the region through radicalization and hawala-based financing. Furthermore, investigative dossiers reveal that several recruits have used valid travel documents to visit Bangladesh for specialized training in explosives.

Vigilance Against Digital Radicalization
Security experts note that these fundamentalist groups are increasingly utilizing encrypted social media platforms like “Purva Akash” to recruit and finance their activities. The STF’s focus has shifted toward these digital trails to prevent the formation of new sleeper cells.
Consequently, the Assam Police have intensified monitoring in sensitive areas. They remain committed to preserving communal harmony and national security. The authorities have urged citizens to report any suspicious activities or meetings to the local police immediately.
As the investigation into the Barpeta arrests continues, more details regarding the suspects’ specific targets and handlers are expected to emerge.
