The “Dining With The Kapoors” Netflix special, which re-examines the legacy of Bollywood icon Raj Kapoor, gave audiences a close-up peek into the Kapoor family’s lives. Many memories were shared, including the sale of the beloved family home, Deonar Cottage in Chembur East, to Godrej Properties in 2019.

Having a meal with the Kapoors

In the special, daughter Rima Jain gave an explanation of the sale’s rationale. She echoed her mother Krishna Kapoor’s sage advice to avoid getting too attached to “bricks and walls” once she was gone. Long-term management of Deonar Cottage would be challenging due to its size, upkeep requirements, and emotional strain, Krishna realized. To prevent deterioration and neglect, she had even recommended selling it while she was still living.

Hindustan Times claims that the sale was made for about ₹100 crore. In May 2019, Godrej Properties reportedly paid between ₹180 and ₹200 crore for the adjacent studio site (RK Films and Studios). The 2.2-acre combined property has been approved by Randhir Kapoor, Ritu Nanda, Rima Jain, and their grandchildren Nitasha and Nikhil Nanda.

According to Randhir Kapoor, who reflected on the emotional impact, “This property has been of great emotional and historical significance to our family.”

Future Plans for the Land

Now that the original cottage has been removed, the property is home to Godrej RKS, a high-end residential development with luxurious 3- and 4-BHK units that range in price from about ₹8 to ₹15 crore.

Several Kapoor family members, including Neetu Kapoor, Ranbir Kapoor, Karisma Kapoor, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Riddhima Kapoor Sahni, and Aadar Jain, join together for Dining With The Kapoors to commemorate Raj Kapoor’s 100th birthday. Armaan Jain and Smriti Mundhra directed the one-hour special, which provides a unique, unguarded look at Bollywood royalty.
