In an interesting throwback, veteran lyricist Sameer recently shared a little-known story about one of Bollywood’s most famous songs, Khaike Paan Banaraswala, from the Amitabh Bachchan film Don. According to Sameer, the song almost didn’t happen because the legendary Kishore Kumar initially refused to sing it.

This surprising detail came out during a recent discussion about the making of the hit track. “There was a huge hungama,” Sameer recalled. “Kishore da didn’t like the song. He thought it wasn’t his style and flatly refused to sing it.”

This created a lot of tension among the team. The song was featured on Amitabh Bachchan and was crucial to the film’s story. The producers were reportedly in a panic. That’s when famous writer and lyricist Javed Akhtar stepped in.

“Javed Akhtar insisted the song had to be in the film,” said Sameer. “He knew its potential. He told the team not to give up on it, and they worked together to change Kishore da’s mind.”

Eventually, Kishore Kumar agreed. Once he recorded the track, the song became a cultural phenomenon. Khaike Paan Banaraswala not only became one of the most popular songs in Bollywood history, but it also helped reshape Amitabh Bachchan’s “angry young man” image with a playful twist.

This behind-the-scenes drama shows how even the most timeless films can start with creative disagreements. Persistence, belief in the art, and teamwork can create magic.
