Udaipur Files Releases Nationwide After Legal Battle

The Hindi film Udaipur Files, starring Vijay Raaz, has finally been released in theatres on Friday. The project faced months of hurdles, including censorship delays, political opposition, and a legal challenge.

Directed by Bharat S Shrinate and Jayant Sinha, and produced by Amit Jani, the film is based on the real-life murder of Kanhaiya Lal in Udaipur, Rajasthan, in June 2022. Lal, a tailor, was killed in broad daylight by two men allegedly angered over a social media post supporting former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma.

The crime triggered nationwide outrage and reignited debates over radicalisation and communal violence. Authorities described the murder as a chilling act of extremist violence.

Delhi High Court Refuses to Halt Release

The film’s release was initially uncertain due to objections over possible religious polarisation. Critics argued that the depiction could inflame tensions. However, on Thursday evening, the Delhi High Court refused to grant a stay, paving the way for Friday’s nationwide premiere.

Producers welcomed the verdict, saying it was a victory for creative freedom. The court’s decision came after the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) delayed certification over sensitivity concerns. With legal clearance, the movie’s theatrical debut proceeded as planned.

Kanhaiya Lal’s Family Attends Premiere in Udaipur

The release has been deeply personal for Kanhaiya Lal’s family. On Friday, his sons, Yash and Tarun, attended the first screening in Udaipur. In a moving tribute, a seat was reserved for their father, with his photograph placed between the brothers.

As the film’s most emotional scene — depicting Lal’s beheading — played, both sons were visibly moved. Speaking to ANI after the screening, Yash urged the public to watch the film.

“I appeal to people to watch the movie and understand what happened to my father on June 28, and how terrorism’s roots work in our country,” he said.

He stressed that the film does not target any religion or hurt community sentiments. Yash also revealed that their mother could not attend due to the emotional toll but would have a seat reserved for Lal’s “soul” in the theatre.

A Story Rooted in a National Tragedy

The murder of Kanhaiya Lal sent shockwaves across India in 2022. The killers recorded the attack and posted it online, sparking widespread condemnation. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) later charged several individuals in connection with the murder, citing evidence of radicalisation.

Udaipur Files attempts to bring the story to a wider audience. The filmmakers argue that understanding such incidents is key to addressing extremist threats. The movie blends factual accounts with dramatic storytelling to convey the emotional and social impact of the tragedy.

Lead actor Vijay Raaz said in a promotional interview that the role was one of the most emotionally challenging in his career. “We had a responsibility to portray events with truth and sensitivity,” he noted.

Political and Public Reactions

Reactions to the film’s release have been divided. Supporters, including Lal’s family, view it as a vital reminder of the dangers of radicalisation. Critics worry about potential communal tensions.

The film has already sparked discussions online, with hashtags like #UdaipurFiles trending on social media. Political leaders from Rajasthan and beyond have weighed in, some calling the release “timely” and others warning against “provoking unrest.”

Industry analysts expect Udaipur Files to perform strongly at the box office, especially in Rajasthan and northern states.
