Shashi Dhiman: Unapologetic, Unfiltered, and Unbothered by the Noise
Comedian Shashi Dhiman has found herself in the spotlight recently — first for her bold remarks about her mother’s relationships, which drew sharp reactions online, and later as the mysterious girl seen during an IPL match. But despite the buzz, Shashi remains grounded and focused on what truly matters to her: her craft.
“I try to approach my material with empathy and awareness,” Shashi shares. “I’m not here to offend or provoke—my goal is to reflect life in a way that feels real and honest. Before delivering a joke, I ask myself: Is this adding something to the conversation, or just venting frustration? If it comes from a place of truth and shared experience, people usually connect with it. And yes, I usually start by laughing at myself. That sets the tone.”
Breaking the Mould, One Joke at a Time
Shashi’s journey hasn’t been without hurdles. From casual sexism to being boxed into narrow expectations, she’s had to carve her own space in the world of stand-up comedy.
“I’ve heard it all — ‘You’re funny… for a girl’ or assumptions that I must only joke about dating or relationships,” she says. “But I’ve learned that the best way to break stereotypes is to just keep showing up. Keep writing, keep performing, and let your work speak. Slowly, the narrative changes. So do people’s expectations.”
On June 27, Shashi was part of Foxtale’s ‘No Fox Given’ comedy showcase in Mumbai — an event where comedians tackled gender norms, social bias, and cultural taboos head-on, with laughter as their weapon.
Fearless, Not Careless
For Shashi, being unapologetic doesn’t mean being insensitive — it’s about owning your voice while remaining respectful.
“There’s a difference between being fearless and being reckless,” she explains. “You don’t have to punch down to be powerful. You just have to speak your truth, even if it’s uncomfortable. That’s where the real impact is.”
As criticism swirls and headlines come and go, Shashi continues to do what she does best — find truth in laughter, and laughter in truth.
