Love against all the odds: Dhadak 2 dares to speak

Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri deliver raw emotional performances in this caste-centric sequel

by Vansh Arora

August 1, 2025:
Dhadak 2 releases in theatres today, bringing back the romance of its 2018 predecessor with a more grounded and politically aware story. Set in Madhya Pradesh and directed by Shazia Iqbal, the film follows Nilesh (Siddhant Chaturvedi), a Dalit law student, and Vidhi (Triptii Dimri), an upper-caste classmate. Their relationship faces challenges from caste violence, systemic discrimination, and harsh social realities.

A Love Story Steeped in Caste Conflict

What begins as a simple college romance soon becomes a harsh look at deep-rooted prejudice. Nilesh experiences shame from classmates and public humiliation involving sludge and urine. His journey shows how caste violence continues even in academic settings. A touching moment features the college principal, played by Zakir Hussain, who reflects on his own past as a lower-caste student while trying to balance justice and systemic bias.

Performances That Hit Home

Siddhant Chaturvedi delivers what many are calling his best performance, conveying internal frustration, emotional restraint, and eventual defiance. Triptii Dimri matches him closely, adding emotional strength to Vidhi and awakening her conscience. The supporting cast, including Vipin Sharma and Saurabh Sachdeva, strengthens the story with powerful performances that raise the emotional stakes.

When Filial Voices are Loud but Timidly Delivered

While Dhadak 2 boldly addresses caste issues, critics note that it doesn’t fully embrace hard-hitting commentary. Although it references elements from the original Tamil film, Pariyerum Perumal, the Hindi adaptation tones down key scenes, likely due to censorship concerns. The storytelling feels polished and restrained instead of raw and relentless.

Still, the film includes moments that shock, such as an upsetting wedding humiliation and intense closing scenes that linger after viewing. Symbolic elements, like portraits of Ambedkar and the use of blue hues, subtly highlight the film’s social and political themes.

Dhadak 2 is not typical Bollywood escapism. It portrays love in a world where caste structures still require loyalty. The film avoids direct confrontation, which makes its emotional impact feel risky. However, Siddhant and Triptii bring depth to a story that truly matters.
