Rajkummar Rao’s Inspiring Journey: From ₹300 Salary to Bollywood Star
Rajkummar Rao’s story is one of hard work, hope, and heart. Today, he’s a well-known actor, but his journey began with very little—just big dreams and a lot of determination.
One of the most touching stories from his early life is what he did with his first salary. He earned ₹300 by teaching dance to a little girl. Instead of spending it on himself, he went and bought groceries and desi ghee for his family. “Buying ghee with my own money felt so big. It made me feel proud,” he once shared. That small act showed how much he cared for his family and how every small step mattered to him.

Rajkummar grew up in Gurugram, Haryana, in a middle-class family. Life wasn’t easy. His father worked in the revenue department, and his teachers even helped pay his school fees when money was tight. He said that they didn’t want him and his siblings to drop out of school—so they helped.
Even in his teens, Rajkummar was serious about acting. He cycled 140 km every day to attend classes in Delhi, because he couldn’t afford bus fares. Later, someone told him to join college just to get a student bus pass, so he could save money and stop cycling so far.
He later went to FTII in Pune to study acting. After that, he moved to Mumbai with big dreams and almost no money. In one interview, he said, “I had only ₹18 in my bank account. I used to skip meals and survive on Parle-G biscuits and Frooti.”
He finally got his first movie role in Love Sex Aur Dhokha in 2010. In 2013, he gained fame with Kai Po Che! and Shahid. Since then, he’s acted in many successful films like Queen, Bareilly Ki Barfi, Stree, Ludo, and more. He’s worked with top actresses like Janhvi Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor.
Now, Rajkummar is back in the spotlight with two new films. Bhool Chuk Maaf, a fun family movie, will release on Amazon Prime Video on May 16. And his next big film, Maalik, an action-packed gangster drama, hits theatres on July 11. It’s a new side of Rajkummar, and fans are excited to see him in a bold, intense role.
On the personal side, Rajkummar is married to actress Patralekhaa. They met in 2010 and tied the knot in 2021. She once joked that she first found him “a little creepy”—but their love story has stood the test of time.
