Online rumors that the story is based on the life and secret missions of the late Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM have been circulating since the trailer was released. The parents of the distinguished officer have now petitioned the Delhi High Court to halt the release of the movie, claiming that Dhurandhar misrepresents their son’s legacy.

Bar and Bench reports that Major Sharma’s parents have petitioned the film, saying that Ranveer Singh’s portrayal of a figure they feel is based on their son, and that the movie is based directly on the Ashoka Chakra awardee’s life and covert operations in Kashmir. The manufacturers allegedly failed to obtain permission from the Indian Army or the family, according to the petition.

The petition claims that sequences from the trailer and advertising materials “mirror Major Sharma’s life,” particularly his employment as an undercover agent in the Valley. It also draws attention to the extensive media conjecture that the officer is connected to the movie, even though the filmmakers didn’t try to get in touch with the family to get their permission or confirm the story. Major Sharma “is not a commercial commodity,” according to the petition, which also cautions against fictionalizing parts of his service “for profit” at the expense of integrity and decency.

Additionally, the parents have claimed that by duplicating Army tactics, protocols, and operational information, the movie jeopardizes national security. They further said that Dhurandhar was not screened for the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADGPI), which is in charge of how the Indian Army is portrayed in the media, nor was he vetted by the Army. The CBFC, ADGPI, Jio Studios, Aditya Dhar, and the Union Ministry of Information and Broadcasting are listed as respondents in the petition.

After being tagged on X by Major Sharma’s brother, Dhar recently responded to the growing rumors. The director reaffirmed that the movie has nothing to do with the officer’s story in response to the request for clarification.

“Hello, sir—” he wrote. The life of courageous Major Mohit Sharma AC(P) SM is not the basis for our movie Dhurandhar. This is a formal explanation. I promise that if a biopic on Mohit Sir is ever made, it will be done with his family’s full consent, in a manner that genuinely honors his sacrifice for the country and the legacy it has left for all of us.

A hearing on the issue has not yet been scheduled by the Delhi High Court. Additionally, Major Sharma’s parents have asked the court to require prior ADGPI permission for any future representations of the Indian Army in media, television, or motion pictures.
