Legal Scrutiny Intensifies After Controversial Haryanvi Track Release

by Tamanna

New Delhi: Indian rapper and singer Badshah is facing legal scrutiny over his recently released Haryanvi hip-hop track, Tateeree, which has sparked widespread debate for allegedly containing obscene content and visuals deemed inappropriate.

An FIR has been registered against Badshah at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Sector 20, Panchkula, following complaints from residents who raised concerns about the song’s impact on societal norms. The complaint alleges that both the song and its official video, released on Badshah’s YouTube channel, feature offensive language, gestures, and visuals showing girls in school uniforms, which, according to the complainants, send a negative message to society.

The FIR cites Section 296 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), related to acts that outrage public decency or disturb social harmony, and Sections 3 and 4 of the Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act, 1986, which prohibit the creation, publication, or circulation of material portraying women in an indecent manner. The police confirmed that the investigation into the Badshah Tateeree controversy is ongoing.

Earlier, Savita Arya, president of the Nari Tu Narayani Utthan Samiti in Panipat, approached the Haryana State Women’s Commission (HSWC), while lawyer Rajnarayan Panghal filed a complaint with the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights. Both raised objections to specific lyrics in Tateeree, alleging that the lines objectify women and minors.

HSWC chairperson Renu Bhatia confirmed that the commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the matter and has issued a formal summons to Badshah. Bhatia also questioned how the track passed regulatory scrutiny, citing her experience as a former member of the Film Censor Board.

Tateeree, released on March 1, 2026, features rapper-singer Badshah alongside vocalist Simran Jaglan, with lyrics penned by Badshah and music composed by Hiten. The official music video, directed by Mahi Sandhu and Joban Sandhu, blends modern rap beats with regional folk influences.

The Badshah Tateeree controversy has reignited debates about content regulation in the music industry and the responsibilities of artists regarding societal norms. The hearing and investigation are being closely monitored, as authorities assess whether the song’s lyrics and visuals violate Indian laws on decency and child protection.
