Renowned Indian singer Arijit Singh has announced that he will no longer take up new assignments as a playback vocalist. In a heartfelt New Year message to his fans, he expressed gratitude for their love and support over the years, calling it the conclusion of a “wonderful journey.”

A Defining Voice of Contemporary Bollywood

Arijit Singh has emerged as one of the most iconic voices in contemporary Hindi film music, known for soulful melodies that have defined modern romantic soundtracks. Born on April 25, 1987, in Jiaganj, Murshidabad, West Bengal, Singh was introduced to music at an early age. Coming from a musically inclined family, he trained in Indian classical music under Rajendra Prasad Hazari, learned tabla from Dhirendra Prasad Hazari, and received guidance in Rabindra Sangeet and pop music from Birendra Prasad Hazari. His early exposure to classical vocals and percussion within the family further shaped his musical foundation.

Rise to Popularity Through Singing Competitions

Singh first gained public attention in 2005, as one of the top six contestants on the reality singing show Fame Gurukul. Though he did not win, his performances earned recognition and a growing fan base. He later won the audience-voted show 10 Ke 10 Le Gaye Dil, solidifying his presence in the industry. At 18, he signed with TIPS Industries and subsequently assisted acclaimed music director Pritam, gaining valuable experience in Bollywood’s music scene.

Singh’s first major break came with Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy’s track “All For One” for High School Musical 2 (Vol. 1). During this period, he also sang for television projects such as Madhubala – Ek Ishq Ek Junoon, Dadagiri, and the Bengali serial Tomay Amay Mile.

His career reached a turning point in 2013 with “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2, which topped Indian music charts, became a modern Bollywood anthem, and won him the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer at the 59th Filmfare Awards.
