India Bans Import of Pakistani Goods After Pahalgam Attack
New Delhi, May 3, 2025 — In a strong response to the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, the Indian government has banned the direct and indirect import of all goods originating from Pakistan, escalating diplomatic and economic tensions between the two countries. The Ministry of Commerce issued an official notification on May 2, enforcing the ban with immediate effect.
The move comes just days after the April 22 terrorist strike in Jammu & Kashmir’s Pahalgam, which killed multiple civilians and has further strained the already fragile Indo-Pak relations.
National Security Cited as Key Reason for Ban
The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), in its official statement, confirmed that the ban is being enforced “in the interest of national security and public policy.” The measure amends the Foreign Trade Policy (FTP) 2023, adding an explicit clause prohibiting the trade of goods from Pakistan until further notice.
“Direct or indirect import or transit of all goods originating in or exported from Pakistan, whether or not freely importable or otherwise permitted, shall be prohibited with immediate effect,” the notification stated.
This blanket ban includes all categories of goods — from textiles and cement to agricultural produce — and will remain in place until further orders from the Government of India.
Wagah-Attari Border Closure Preceded Ban
India had already shut down the Wagah-Attari trade route, the only active land trade corridor between the two nations, in the immediate aftermath of the Pahalgam attack. With this new ban, even indirect imports of Pakistani goods through third-party countries like the UAE, Singapore, or Afghanistan are now explicitly prohibited.
The decision is expected to halt any ongoing informal trade practices that might have continued through alternate routes, plugging previous policy gaps.
Trade and Diplomatic Impact
Though bilateral trade between India and Pakistan has seen a steep decline over the years — especially since the 2019 Pulwama attack — certain Pakistani exports like cement, dry fruits, and textiles had continued to enter India through informal or third-party channels.
This ban formalizes a complete trade shutdown and may impact regional trade dynamics and affect South Asian economic forums and initiatives.
Government May Allow Case-by-Case Exceptions
While the policy is comprehensive, the Ministry of Commerce clarified that exceptions could be made, but only with explicit approval from the Indian government. These exceptions are expected to be rare and highly scrutinized, especially for humanitarian aid or international obligations.
The move is also likely to encourage the Make in India campaign by reducing dependence on foreign goods and boosting local production of previously imported materials from Pakistan.
Political and Public Reaction
The ban has been widely welcomed by political leaders and nationalist groups. BJP spokespersons stated that the government’s decision is in line with its commitment to national security and zero tolerance towards terrorism. Opposition parties have urged the government to ensure that the policy does not adversely impact domestic industries relying on raw materials previously sourced from Pakistan.
