Kerala’s First Tribal Air Hostess: Gopika Govind Breaks Barriers and Flies High

From Karimbala to the Skies: Gopika Govind Becomes Kerala’s First Tribal Air Hostess

In an inspiring story of determination, resilience, and empowerment, 24-year-old Gopika Govind from Kerala has made history by becoming the state’s first tribal air hostess. Hailing from the Karimbala tribal community in the ST colony of Kavunkudi near Alakkode, Gopika’s journey from a modest background to a soaring aviation career is not just heartwarming but also symbolic of progress toward inclusivity.

A Dream Takes Flight

Born to P Govindan and VG Biji, both daily-wage labourers, Gopika’s life in her early years was shaped by financial limitations and scarce resources. Despite these challenges, she nurtured a childhood dream of becoming a flight attendant — a dream that seemed far-fetched given her circumstances.

Initially, Gopika pursued a BSc in Chemistry, a course chosen out of necessity due to its affordability and proximity. But a spark reignited when she came across a photograph of air hostesses in uniform in a newspaper, reminding her of the goal she had once set aside.

“If you have a dream, pursue it fearlessly. You should also have the confidence to achieve it,” Gopika told Manorama Online. “Without that, we will reach nowhere.”

Training with Government Support

Gopika’s turning point came when she discovered a government-backed training scheme for tribal students. She enrolled in a one-year diploma course at Dream Sky Aviation Training Academy in Kalpetta, Wayanad. Thanks to the tribal student welfare initiative, she received financial aid covering ₹1 lakh of her fees, eliminating the burden of cost that would otherwise have been insurmountable.

Her story underscores the value of targeted educational support schemes that enable youth from marginalized communities to access skill development and employment opportunities.

Breaking Through the Barriers

Even before completing her aviation course, Gopika began applying for cabin crew roles. Her first interview didn’t lead to selection, but she didn’t let that deter her. On her second attempt, she succeeded.

After three months of professional training, she joined Air India Express, marking the beginning of a career that once seemed out of reach. Her first flight, a route from Kannur to a Gulf destination, symbolized not just professional success but a landmark moment for representation and aspiration within Kerala’s tribal communities.

Empowerment Through Education and Inclusion

Gopika’s achievement is significant not only for her personal success but also for what it represents in terms of tribal empowerment and gender inclusion in the aviation industry. Her success sheds light on:

  • The importance of affordable, accessible skill training for underprivileged communities.
  • How government schemes, when implemented effectively, can transform lives.
  • The value of persistence and self-belief in breaking generational cycles of poverty.

Her journey has ignited conversations on the need for increased support for tribal youth in professional and technical fields.

Words of Wisdom from Gopika

In her message to aspiring young individuals from marginalized backgrounds, Gopika advises:

“Don’t announce to the world about your goals or your pursuit. Let the results talk for your hard work.”

Her humble but powerful perspective reflects the attitude that carried her from a village settlement to the skies.
