Punjab Wheat Procurement: Mandis Ready to Welcome Farmers with Full Support and Arrangements
Punjab’s Mandis Fully Prepared for Wheat Procurement Season 2025
Punjab is ready to kick off its much-anticipated wheat procurement season, with the state government making extensive preparations to ensure a smooth and trouble-free experience for its farmers. According to Lal Chand Kataruchak, the Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs, all 1,864 grain markets, or mandis, across the state have been equipped with the necessary facilities, ensuring farmers face no issues when selling their wheat.
With Punjab expecting a bumper wheat harvest this year, the state’s goal is to procure a total of 124 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of wheat. The Minister emphasized that the government, led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, is fully prepared to handle the large volume of crops and is committed to facilitating over 8 lakh farmers during the procurement process.
Key Arrangements for Wheat Procurement in Punjab
The state government has taken several steps to ensure that farmers have a smooth experience at the mandis. From ensuring access to cold drinking water and fans to maintaining cleanliness, all logistics have been carefully planned. The facilities in the mandis are designed to accommodate large numbers of farmers while maintaining comfort and safety. In addition to these measures, transportation and storage arrangements have been ramped up to support the wheat procurement process.
To ensure the procurement process runs without a hitch, the Punjab government has also made provisions for over 600 temporary yards. These yards are in addition to the regular grain markets, and they will help manage the influx of harvested wheat during the peak procurement period. The government has also procured 99% of the gunny bags required for the season and ensured sufficient space for storage and transportation of the wheat.
Staffing and Operations: No Leave During Procurement Season
In a move to ensure that the procurement process remains uninterrupted, the Punjab government has made it clear that no staff working in the grain markets will be granted leave unless under exceptional circumstances. This decision reflects the state’s dedication to managing the large-scale operations efficiently and ensuring that every farmer’s wheat is procured without delay.
The government has also pledged to facilitate the timely transfer of payments. Farmers can expect their payments within 24 hours of selling their wheat at the Minimum Support Price (MSP), which is set at Rs. 2,425 per quintal. This swift payment process aims to alleviate any concerns farmers might have regarding delayed payments.
Enhanced Farmer Support at Mandis
The state’s commitment to supporting farmers extends beyond basic procurement services. Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak recently conducted a review of preparations in several districts, including Ludhiana, Moga, Faridkot, Ferozepur, and Barnala. He took stock of essential amenities for farmers, ensuring that clean drinking water, shaded resting spots, and adequate lighting are available throughout the procurement season.
The Minister also instructed officials to be present at the mandis during the entire procurement period. This move is designed to ensure that any issues are swiftly addressed and that farmers’ concerns are heard and acted upon immediately. Additionally, first-aid kits will be readily available at all mandis, ensuring that any medical emergencies are handled promptly.
The Target and Financial Arrangements
Punjab’s wheat procurement target for 2025 is set at 124 LMT, with the state government having secured a Cash Credit Limit (CCL) of Rs. 28,894 crore for the season. These financial arrangements are vital in supporting the procurement process and ensuring that the state can handle the required volume of wheat. This substantial CCL will also help the government manage the logistics of transporting, storing, and ultimately distributing the wheat.
The Punjab government has also arranged for an adequate supply of containers to transport the harvested wheat to designated storage facilities, ensuring no disruption to the flow of procurement.
Ensuring Transparency and Fairness
Minister Lal Chand Kataruchak emphasized that the Punjab government is committed to buying every single grain of wheat brought by the farmers. The Minister assured that strict action would be taken against any mistakes or carelessness during the procurement process. Farmers have been assured that their wheat will be purchased at the MSP without any hindrance, and the process will be fair and transparent.
The Punjab government’s efforts to make the procurement process smoother, faster, and more efficient are intended to build trust and confidence among farmers. By ensuring that farmers are paid quickly and the procurement process remains transparent, the state aims to strengthen its relationship with the farming community and uphold the agricultural backbone of Punjab.
What’s Next? The Wheat Procurement Season Ahead
With all necessary preparations in place, the wheat procurement season in Punjab is set to begin. The state’s commitment to its farmers is clear, and the government’s proactive approach will play a crucial role in ensuring that the season runs smoothly. The Minister’s reassurances regarding payments and facilities have given farmers confidence that their hard work will be valued and rewarded.
As the procurement season progresses, the Punjab government’s careful planning and execution will ensure that farmers’ interests remain at the forefront. The state’s target of 124 LMT of wheat is an ambitious one, but with the comprehensive arrangements made, the government is optimistic about successfully meeting this goal.
