Punjab Government Disburses Rs.27.79 Crore to 20,000+ Farmers for Adopting Water-Saving DSR Technique
In a significant move to promote sustainable farming practices and conserve water resources, the Punjab Government has disbursed Rs.27.79 crore to 20,229 farmers for adopting the Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technique during the 2024 Kharif season. This initiative, led by the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann and spearheaded by the Punjab Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister S. Gurmeet Singh Khudian, highlights the state’s commitment to addressing water scarcity and improving agricultural practices.
The amount is part of a broader effort by the government to encourage the adoption of the DSR technique, which directly sows rice seeds into the field, eliminating the need for transplanting seedlings. This process has shown a notable increase in the area cultivated using the DSR method, providing substantial water savings in the water-intensive paddy cultivation process.
Direct Seeded Rice: A Water-Saving Innovation in Punjab Farming
The Direct Seeded Rice (DSR) technique involves sowing rice seeds directly into the soil, bypassing the need for labor-intensive transplanting of paddy seedlings. By adopting this method, farmers can reduce water consumption by up to 30-40%, making it a highly sustainable alternative to traditional rice farming, which often relies on heavy irrigation.
In the 2024 Kharif season, Punjab saw a remarkable 47% increase in the area cultivated with DSR compared to the previous year. While 1.72 lakh acres were sown using DSR in 2023, this number jumped to 2.53 lakh acres in 2024, demonstrating the growing interest in water-saving farming techniques across the state.
The adoption of DSR farming aligns with Punjab’s larger goal of reducing its groundwater depletion, which has been a significant concern due to the overuse of irrigation systems. By promoting methods that reduce water usage, the Punjab government is seeking to make agricultural practices more sustainable, ensuring that the state’s farming future remains viable despite ongoing water scarcity challenges.
Financial Incentives for Farmers

In the first phase of the disbursement, which took place during the first week of March 2025, the state released Rs.4.34 crore to over 9,500 farmers. Following this, the remaining Rs.23.45 crore has been distributed among the remaining farmers, ensuring that all eligible beneficiaries received their due payment. This step is part of Punjab’s effort to ensure a smooth and equitable transition to more sustainable farming practices.
The disbursement has been carried out through bank transfers, directly credited into the accounts of the beneficiary farmers. This method is designed to streamline the process, ensuring that funds reach farmers promptly without delays.
