Punjab Budget 2025: Rs. 5,983 Crore Set Aside for Major City Facelift and Infrastructure Overhaul
Chandigarh, March 26, 2025 — The Punjab Budget 2025, presented by Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema, promises a transformative overhaul of urban infrastructure across the state. Dr. Ravjot Singh, Punjab’s Local Government Minister, described the budget as a visionary document aimed at bolstering the state’s growth and enhancing the quality of life for its citizens. A substantial Rs. 5,983 crore has been earmarked for the facelift of key cities, with specific provisions made for road infrastructure, public transport, and urban amenities to make Punjab a more environmentally friendly, efficient, and livable state.
Rs. 5,983 Crore for City Revamp and Infrastructure Development
Dr. Ravjot Singh emphasized that the Punjab Government is committed to modernizing the state’s infrastructure, with an initial focus on the major urban hubs of Ludhiana, Amritsar, Jalandhar, and SAS Nagar (Mohali). These cities are set to receive an extensive facelift, including world-class roads, upgraded footpaths, a revamped electricity system, and enhanced water supply networks. The budget sets aside Rs.140 crore specifically for the construction of these roads, which will adhere to international standards.
The road infrastructure improvements are part of a holistic urban development plan that aims to eliminate traffic congestion, improve safety, and enhance mobility for the millions of people who live and work in Punjab’s urban centers. According to Dr. Singh, renowned architects from across the country will be enlisted to design the roads, ensuring that the infrastructure not only meets global standards but is also built to last. In fact, contractors will be responsible for maintaining the roads for the next 10 years, ensuring durability and longevity.
Modernizing Urban Infrastructure for Seamless Mobility
The Punjab Government’s plans include the construction of beautifully designed footpaths, which will ensure seamless pedestrian movement throughout the cities. The new footpaths will be designed with uniformity in mind, offering equal width and accessibility across all four cities. Traffic-related issues will also be addressed as part of this urban facelift, with a particular focus on removing bottlenecks and ensuring smooth traffic flow.
Dr. Singh pointed out that as part of the road infrastructure upgrade, there will be a revamp of lane markings and periodic repainting every three months, ensuring the roads remain well-maintained and in optimal condition. Punjab Municipal Development Fund & PMSIP for Town Upgrades
Beyond the major cities, the Punjab Budget 2025 also includes provisions for the improvement of 166 towns across the state. A total of Rs. 225 crore has been allocated for the Punjab Municipal Development Fund (PMDF), and Rs. 300 crore will be utilized under the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Program (PMSIP). These funds will be used to address essential services such as sanitation, sewerage systems, water supply, and street lighting in towns that house about 40 percent of the state’s urban population.
