India and Australia have unveiled a roadmap to expand cooperation in sports, focusing on athlete development

India and Australia have announced a new roadmap to strengthen sports cooperation, aiming to build stronger partnerships in areas including athlete development, sports science, technology, major sporting events, and women’s participation in sports.

The India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap builds on the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Cooperation in Sports and focuses on creating long-term opportunities for both countries. The initiative comes at a time when India is preparing for major sporting milestones, including the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Ahmedabad and the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Under the India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap, both countries will work together to improve high-performance sports centres in India and share expertise in athlete training.

The partnership will focus on:

  • Exchange programmes for coaches and sports educators.
  • Development of high-performance coaching models.
  • Strengthening para-sports through Australian expertise in classification, coaching, and athlete support.
  • Promoting sports education exchanges between universities in both countries.

The roadmap will also explore opportunities to support talented Indian athletes through scholarships and high-performance programmes in Australia.

Boost to Sports Science and Technology

India and Australia will encourage joint research projects in sports science and technology. The collaboration will cover areas such as:

  • Athlete performance analytics.
  • Injury prevention techniques.
  • Sports nutrition.
  • Wearable technology.
  • Recovery methods.
  • Para-sports research.

Universities from both countries will also be encouraged to develop joint sports-related academic programmes.

Collaboration Around Major Sporting Events

The India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap identifies major sporting events as a key area of cooperation.

Both countries will share expertise in hosting large-scale sporting events and explore opportunities for exhibition matches and youth tournaments.

The roadmap also welcomes the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) match in Chennai in December 2026 and encourages further cricket cooperation between Cricket Australia and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Growth of Sports Industry and Investment

The partnership aims to strengthen business opportunities in the sports sector. India and Australia will promote cooperation in:

  • Sports equipment manufacturing.
  • Sports media and broadcasting.
  • Event management.
  • Sports startups.
  • High-performance coaching services.

The countries will also work towards expanding sports goods trade and sharing expertise in athlete wellbeing, strength and conditioning, psychology, and nutrition.

Special Focus on Women in Sports

The roadmap highlights women’s participation and leadership in sports as a major priority.

Joint initiatives will be launched to encourage:

  • Women athlete development.
  • Leadership opportunities.
  • Health and fitness programmes.
  • Bilateral women’s sports tournaments.

The partnership aims to use sports as a platform for women’s empowerment, economic opportunities, and social inclusion.

India-Australia Sports Partnership: A New Era of Cooperation

The India-Australia Sports Collaboration Roadmap aims to create practical and sustainable partnerships between sporting organisations, universities, businesses, and government bodies.
