RAF Deployed Amid Tensions in Sambhal

SAMBHAL(UP) :  Rapid Action Force (RAF) soldiers were stationed near Jama Masjid in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, in response to rising security concerns over the ongoing construction of a police post in the area. The strategic deployment of the RAF comes after violent clashes in November, which left multiple individuals injured and four dead during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) examination of the mosque. The police post is intended to bolster security and ensure the safety of both locals and worshippers, particularly during sensitive times.

Background: Clashes and Tensions in Sambhal

The tensions in Sambhal escalated on November 24, 2023, when a survey by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was conducted at the Mughal-era Jama Masjid, following a petition filed in a local court. The petition claimed that the mosque’s site was originally that of a Harihar temple, sparking protests and violent confrontations between police forces and local residents.

During the survey, which was aimed at investigating the historical significance of the mosque’s location, clashes broke out, leading to fatalities and injuries. The violence left four people dead and several others wounded, including both police personnel and civilians. This incident underscored the delicate nature of religious and historical disputes in the region, particularly when it involves structures with deep cultural and historical ties.

Security Measures: RAF Deployment and Police Post Construction

In response to the unrest and in a bid to prevent further violence, the Uttar Pradesh Police have ramped up security measures in Sambhal. Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel were deployed in the vicinity of Jama Masjid to maintain law and order during the construction of the police post.

Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) of Sambhal, Shrish Chandra, spoke to ANI and confirmed that the new police post is being built with the aim of ensuring security around the Sambhal Jama Masjid area. Chandra emphasized the importance of having a local police presence to prevent any untoward incidents and facilitate swift responses to emerging situations.

“The police post is being built to keep the areas around Sambhal Jama Masjid safe, so the available police force is present here,” ASP Chandra stated. This proactive measure aims to provide better surveillance and assistance in case of any future unrest.

Friday Prayers: Ensuring Peace Amid Security Efforts

Despite the ongoing construction, the Friday prayers at Sambhal Jama Masjid were conducted smoothly, with no compromise on security. The RAF forces, along with local police, ensured that the situation remained calm and under control during the prayers, allowing worshippers to attend without fear of disturbances. The visible presence of security personnel reassured locals and minimized any potential threats to public order.

The Significance of the Jama Masjid and the ASI Survey

The Jama Masjid in Sambhal holds significant historical and religious value to the local community, and its connection to the ongoing ASI survey has become a contentious issue. The ASI survey, which was originally intended to study the historical context of the mosque, has now become a flashpoint for communal tensions. The claim that the mosque was originally the site of a Harihar temple—a claim put forward by a local petition—has added fuel to an already volatile situation.

While the ASI survey was a peaceful attempt to explore the mosque’s historical layers, the protests surrounding the issue have led to violent confrontations. This has raised questions about the intersection of religion, history, and politics in Uttar Pradesh, particularly in areas with deep-rooted communal sensitivities.

The Role of the Police and Government Authorities

In the aftermath of the violence, government authorities have focused on maintaining peace and preventing further escalation. The construction of the police post near the Jama Masjid is a direct result of the need for a strengthened law enforcement presence to respond to any future issues swiftly. ASP Shrish Chandra highlighted the urgency of the police presence, noting that the police post will allow local law enforcement to be stationed closer to the site and respond more effectively to emerging challenges.

The police post is also part of a broader initiative to improve security infrastructure in Sambhal—an area that has witnessed communal disturbances in the past. Authorities are keen to ensure that any disputes over historical and religious sites are handled in a manner that prioritizes public safety and upholds law and order.

Looking Ahead: Maintaining Peace and Stability

The deployment of RAF soldiers and the establishment of the police post are just a part of the ongoing efforts to maintain stability in the region. As tensions remain high in Sambhal, local authorities are focusing on promoting dialogue and ensuring that the rights of all communities are respected.

In the wake of the November violence, there has been a heightened sense of urgency among government officials to avoid further escalation. The success of the police’s efforts will depend on maintaining a careful balance between safeguarding religious freedom and preventing the spread of violence.

Conclusion: A Step Towards Long-Term Peace

The construction of the police post near Sambhal’s Jama Masjid represents a critical step towards ensuring peace and stability in the area. With RAF soldiers on the ground and local police ready to respond, authorities are hopeful that the region will avoid further violent outbreaks. While the ASI survey continues to stir emotions, the police’s enhanced presence provides a much-needed layer of security as the situation remains tense.

As Sambhal moves forward, maintaining public safety and fostering communal harmony will remain paramount, ensuring that the legacy of both historical landmarks and the diverse communities around them are preserved in a peaceful manner.
