The IMD Rain Alert has forecast widespread rainfall across large parts of India on July 2, with heavy to very heavy showers expected in nearly 19 states. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the southwest monsoon continues to advance rapidly, bringing significant rainfall activity to northern, central, western, and northeastern regions of the country.
Several areas of Delhi-NCR witnessed rainfall on Thursday morning, providing relief from humid conditions. Meteorologists have indicated that the monsoon is likely to cover more parts of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Rajasthan over the next two days.
IMD Rain Alert for Northern and Eastern India
Under the latest IMD Rain Alert, states including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and several Himalayan regions are expected to receive heavy rainfall. The weather department has also predicted intense rain activity across northeastern states, where monsoon conditions remain highly active.
According to IMD, a low-pressure area extending from Punjab to the northern Bay of Bengal is contributing to widespread rainfall. Additionally, a trough stretching from southern Gujarat to Karnataka is enhancing moisture inflow and rainfall intensity across multiple regions.
Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rain Expected in Western India
The IMD Rain Alert has warned of extremely heavy rainfall in South Gujarat, Konkan, and Goa. Coastal Karnataka is also likely to witness very heavy rainfall in isolated locations.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra remains on high alert, particularly in ghat regions and parts of Mumbai, where the weather department has issued a red alert due to the possibility of intense rainfall and waterlogging.

Central India Likely to Receive Heavy Showers
The IMD Rain Alert also covers Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh, where heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected at several locations. Both eastern and western parts of Madhya Pradesh are likely to experience significant rain activity throughout the day.
Weather experts have advised residents in vulnerable areas to remain cautious, as heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding and disruptions in transportation.
Rain Forecast for Delhi, Punjab, and Hill States
According to the latest IMD Rain Alert, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi are likely to witness widespread rainfall. Western Uttar Pradesh is also expected to receive heavy showers.
In Delhi, after morning rainfall in several areas, IMD has forecast light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds in parts of the national capital later in the day.
The hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are also expected to receive very heavy rainfall, increasing the risk of landslides and flash floods in vulnerable regions.
Monsoon Gains Momentum Across India
With the southwest monsoon becoming increasingly active, the IMD Rain Alert highlights the likelihood of continued rainfall across many parts of the country over the coming days. Residents in affected regions are advised to monitor local weather updates and follow advisories issued by authorities to stay safe during periods of intense rain.
As monsoon conditions strengthen further, several states can expect more widespread showers, bringing relief from summer heat while also posing challenges related to flooding and travel disruptions.
