NEW DELHI — A horrifying Delhi fire tragedy claimed the lives of nine people, including a one-year-old infant, in the early hours of Sunday, May 3, 2026. The blaze erupted at a four-storey residential building in East Delhi’s Vivek Vihar Phase-I around 3:47 am. According to fire officials, the fire quickly engulfed flats on the second, third, and fourth floors. While the exact cause remains under investigation, early reports and resident testimonies point toward a suspected air conditioner (AC) explosion. This incident adds to a growing number of summer fire emergencies linked to electrical overloads.

Emergency responders reached the spot within minutes after receiving a distress call. As many as 14 fire tenders were deployed to battle the intense flames, which were finally brought under control by 8 am. Firefighters managed to rescue over a dozen residents during the five-hour-long operation. However, heavy iron grilles and barred windows on the upper floors significantly hindered evacuation efforts. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed deep distress over the loss of lives and assured that the government is providing all possible assistance to the affected families.

Casualties and the Heroic Rescue Efforts

The majority of the fatalities in this Delhi fire tragedy occurred on the building’s second floor. Five members of a single family, identified as Arvind (60), Anita (58), Nishant (35), Anchal (33), and 1.5-year-old Akash, perished on this level. On the third floor, another family of three—Nitin Jain (50), his wife Shailey (48), and their son Samyak (25)—was tragically killed. Additionally, Shikha Jain (45) was recovered from the first floor. Meanwhile, Naveen Jain (48) was rushed to Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital with 30% burn injuries.

Despite the high death toll, the swift intervention of the Delhi Fire Service prevented a larger disaster. Firefighters used specialized ladders and cutting tools to reach residents trapped behind metal grilles. Moreover, a delivery agent who was the first to notice the fire played a crucial role by alerting authorities immediately. He reported seeing sparks coming from an external AC outlet before the fire escalated. Consequently, police have initiated a forensic probe to determine if technical failures or safety lapses contributed to the rapid spread of the fire.

Safety Concerns: AC Blasts and High Gas Prices

This Delhi fire tragedy highlights the extreme risks of electrical fires during peak summer months. Local residents claimed that a massive blast in an AC unit served as the trigger for the inferno. Furthermore, officials are investigating whether a short circuit occurred before the explosion. Because many residents were asleep at the time, they had very little chance to escape as smoke filled the staircase. Domestic items stored in the flats also fueled the flames, causing the fire to jump rapidly between floors.

Amidst this tragedy, the region is also grappling with economic pressures as gas prices have hit $4.39 per gallon due to ongoing international conflicts. Additionally, the Delhi government is monitoring relief operations closely. For now, the Vivek Vihar community mourns the families lost in this early morning catastrophe.
