Sagar Rabari Criticizes Timing of US Trade Deal, Calls for Parliamentary Discussion

Ahmedabad, Gujarat: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Gujarat leaders, State General Secretary Sagar Rabari and Chief Spokesperson Dr. Karan Barot, held a press conference to question the BJP government over the recent trade deal with the United States. They expressed serious concerns about the lack of transparency and the potential impact on Indian farmers, industries, and the national economy.

Sagar Rabari stated that the trade deal has created widespread anxiety among the public. “Despite the ongoing Parliament session, the government has not released details of this important deal. It seems as if the US President is making critical decisions for India, as though our nation is his 51st state,” he said. He added that India has benefited from cheaper Russian crude oil, but the deal appears to phase out this advantage to appease the US.

Rabari criticized the government for mixed messaging on tariffs. While some claim that tariffs have been reduced from 25% to 18%, he argued that before US-imposed tariffs, Indian products faced 2–3% duties, which have now effectively increased to 18%. He warned that the deal may allow the US to dominate India’s vast market, causing harm to farmers and domestic industries.

He further questioned the timing of such announcements, emphasizing that major trade agreements should be discussed in Parliament rather than announced by foreign leaders. Sagar Rabari warned that cheaper US agricultural products entering India could harm domestic farmers, while sectors like textiles, gems, jewelry, and pharmaceuticals could face significant losses, potentially increasing unemployment and triggering an economic slowdown.

The AAP demanded full transparency from the government, including sector-wise and product-wise details of duties, exemptions, and tariffs. Sagar Rabari stressed that India’s industries may not be strong enough to compete with zero-duty American products such as cotton and fruits. He added that once all information is released, AAP will educate farmers and businesses about the deal’s implications and advocate for India’s interests.

“The government should publicly disclose where and how much duty the US will impose. If this deal has any potential to benefit Gujarat’s youth in terms of employment, why is the government not taking credit? Hoardings and announcements are made for minor achievements, yet none have been displayed for this critical trade deal,” he said. Sagar Rabari further asserted that the deal contains elements that could endanger India’s economy and future.
