Due to Maharashtra’s civic body elections, the NSE and BSE have declared that the Indian stock exchanges will be closed on January 15, 2026. After causing uncertainty by implying that trading would continue, the National Stock Exchange later made it plain that the day was a holiday for the debt and capital segments. For derivatives and equity, the Bombay Stock Exchange made the same choice.

As a result of the clarification, investors are now at ease. For traders’ convenience, both exchanges have also made available the complete 2026 holiday schedule.

Reasons for Market Closures on January 15, 2026, NSE BSE Trading Holiday

The NSE has formally designated Thursday, January 15, 2026, as a trading holiday for the debt and capital markets. The closure, according to the exchange, is because of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation Elections. Additionally, the BSE declared that both stock and derivatives trading would be off on the same day.

Due to the exchange’s previous indications of regular operations, many traders thought markets would stay open. Investor and broker platform misunderstanding resulted from this. Since the most recent notice, both exchanges have clarified their stance.

On January 15, there won’t be any trading of derivatives, share purchases or sales, or activity in the debt area. Now, investors will need to modify their schedules if they had booked trades around this date.

In 29 civic bodies throughout Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, the vacation is associated with elections. January 16 is when the results will be announced. With almost 16,000 candidates and more than 2,800 seats, the polls are enormous. Because the exercise is so sensitive and large, the markets will be closed for the day.

Together with the announcement on January 15, the exchanges have also made public the full list of 2026 holidays. This helps investors avoid last-minute confusion and plan trades ahead of time.

In observance of Republic Day, markets will be closed on January 26 after January 15. There are no trading holidays in February other than weekends. Shri Ram Navami on March 26 and Shri Mahavir Jayanti on March 31 will mark the end of trade in March.

Two holidays are scheduled for April: Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti on April 14 and Good Friday on April 3. On May 28 for Bakr Eid and May 1 for Maharashtra Day, marketplaces will be closed. For Muharram, June 26 is a holiday.

July and August are not workday holidays. In October, there will be two holidays: Gandhi Jayanti on October 2 and Dussehra on October 20. September 14 will be closed for Ganesh Chaturthi.

November is Diwali Laxmi Pujan (with Muhurat Trading) on November 8 and Diwali Balipratipada on November 10. On November 24, we celebrate Guru Nanak Jayanti. We will be closed on December 25th for Christmas.
