Punjab’s Public Works Department reports record progress in 2025–26, with major road upgrades, bridge construction, and large-scale infrastructure expansion across the state.

The Punjab government is still working to create a Rangla Punjab and guarantee the state’s overall growth under the direction of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. The Public Works Department has been steadily striving to give the people of Punjab a strong and dependable road network in accordance with this objective.

According to information provided by Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO, 501.76 kilometers of the planned 840 kilometers of plan roads have already been upgraded this fiscal year at an estimated cost of Rs. 663 crore. To date, this initiative has spent a total of Rs. 334.31 crore. He disclosed that 31 bridges would be built between 2025 and 2026, with a budget of Rs. 155 crore. Of these, two bridges have been finished, while work on 29 bridges is presently underway. The total amount spent under this initiative is Rs. 30.99 crore.

The Cabinet Minister added that the department has experienced growth in the fiscal year 2025–2026. He explained that 125 km of roads and 10 bridges would be built under the NABARD initiative in 2025–2026, with an estimated cost of Rs. 192 crore. Eight bridges and 52 kilometers of roads have already been finished under this plan.

He added that 641 km of road development was scheduled for 2025–2026 under PMGSY, with a budget of Rs. 600 crore. Of that, 273.96 km have already been finished, and Rs. 243 crore has been spent. In a similar vein, 32.39 km of the 70 km of roads that were planned for National Highways projects—at a cost of Rs. 430 crore—have already been built. He stated that Rs. 351.46 crore has already been spent under this heading.

At a cost of Rs. 1543 crore, PWD has started a campaign to modernize and repair 10262 link roads. The corresponding market committees have already begun working on the project. Additionally, 7767 km of link roads have been widened, modernized, and connected at an estimated cost of Rs. 2920 crore. The project is expected to begin soon, and bids have been requested.

Given the significance of Plan Roads, including State Highways, MDRs, and ODRs, a unique program has been developed to upgrade 2834 km of Plan Roads at an estimated cost of Rs 2363 Crore. All of these projects will soon have bids assigned to them.
