In a very moving ceremony beside the Ganga on Wednesday morning, the Deol family came to Haridwar to perform the Asthi Visarjan of the late film icon Dharmendra. Sunny Deol, Bobby Deol, Karan Deol, and other family members were spotted in a secluded ghat close to Pilibhit House, a century-old riverfront home where the actor’s remains had been stored since the family had arrived the day before. Videos on the internet show the family, dressed in white, performing the rites under strict protection, embracing each other as they dumped the ashes into the river.

A confrontation between Sunny Deol and a paparazzo

But when Sunny Deol approached a paparazzo who was secretly documenting the event, what should have been a calm parting moment took an unexpected turn. The actor approaches the cameraman, snatches his camera, and chastises him, saying, “Paisa chahiye? “Kitne paise chahiye tere ko?” Online discussions over privacy at times of grief were triggered by the occurrence, particularly in light of the family’s attempts to limit the Haridwar customs.

Sunny was seen briefly drinking tea on the balcony of Pilibhit House on Tuesday prior to the ceremony; this incident also went viral on social media. In order to avoid being in the spotlight, the Deol family discreetly left the ghat and headed for the airport after finishing the Asthi Visarjan on Wednesday morning.

The rationale behind Dharmendra’s private burial

Dharmendra was cremated in Mumbai in a similarly private ceremony after he died on November 24 at the age of 89 from age-related problems. Before his abrupt downturn, the actor, who had just been released from the hospital on November 12 after being admitted for breathing problems, appeared to be recovering. At Vile Parle, his funeral was brief, private, and free from the spotlight.

In the days that followed, Hema Malini organized a prayer meeting with daughters Esha and Ahana, while his first wife Prakash Kaur’s family hosted another with boys Sunny and Bobby.

Filmmaker Hamad Al Reyami later revealed a chat he had with Hema Malini at one of these events, during which she lamented that the family’s decision to keep the funeral low-key prevented people from paying their respects to Dharmendra one last time. She informed him that Dharmendra’s first family members had made the decision.

“Then she added, with great sadness, that she was sorry his fans hadn’t had a chance to see him one last time,” she recalled. “Dharmendra, throughout his life, never wanted anyone to see him weak or ill,” she added to me in a motherly tone. Even his closest family members were not aware of his suffering. And the family makes the final decision after a person dies.

Dharmendra leaves a large family—six children total—as well as a significant movie legacy. He married Prakash Kaur in 1954, fathering Sunny and Bobby as well as two daughters. In 1980, he married Hema Malini, with whom he has daughters Esha and Ahana.
