Malavika Mohanan discusses work-life balance, eight-hour shifts, and shares insights on ‘Thangalaan’ and her career in Indian cinema.
During a session at the ABP Southern Rising Summit, Malavika Mohanan talked about her filmography, her work in Tamil, Malayalam, and Hindi cinema, and her experiences working with celebrities like Rajinikanth and Thalapathy Vijay. After Deepika Padukone subtly pushed for greater work-life balance after becoming a mother, the Thangalaan actress also spoke out on the ongoing discussion surrounding the planned eight-hour work shift in the film business.

When Malavika thought back to her early years, she remembered that her father, the well-known cinematographer K.U. Mohanan, had been present more in his earlier career. She pointed out that although a number of Telugu and Tamil films have adopted the eight-hour arrangement, the Malayalam and Hindi film industries have not yet done so.
She emphasized the importance of balance by saying, “We all need that, and if that work life balance works out, it’s great.” Additionally, Malavika cited Scandinavian nations who had implemented four-day work weeks and experienced higher levels of production.

The actress also talked about her love of the visual arts, revealing that she likes taking pictures of nature and that if she hadn’t been an actress, she might have tried her hand at photography or filmmaking. She stated that “for longest time in y career, I wanted to be a documentary filmmaker,” adding that it is still something she could pursue in the future, when asked what other career she would have chosen.
Malavika on the poor performance of Thangalaan
Malavika, who most recently starred in Hridayapooram, has two big releases coming soon. “Thangalaan was a passion project for me,” she stated in reference to the film’s lackluster box office performance. Although the movie needed a lot of mental and physical skills as well as martial arts, I enjoyed the journey it took. I take great pride in pushing myself to the limit of what my body can handle.
Despite the film’s lack of commercial success, she disclosed that she has integrated the Simblam martial arts program, which she trained for the movie, into her daily routine.
