A proud moment for India as the blind women’s team wins the first T20 World Cup. Their courage and skill set a new benchmark in sports.

After their women’s cricket team won the first-ever T20 World Cup for the Blind, Indians are rejoicing.

The final, which took place on Sunday in the city of Colombo, Sri Lanka, saw India overcome Nepal by seven wickets.

It is anticipated that the triumph, which came weeks after India’s maiden Women’s One-Day International World Cup title, will give the nation’s disabled athletes a boost.

Six teams competed in a single round-robin tournament: India, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, and the United States.

A plastic ball with jingling metal bearings is used in blind cricket, and players are categorized by sight: B1 (completely blind), B2, and B3. A combination of all three must be fielded by teams. The ball is bowled along the ground underarm. For safety, B1 hitters employ runners, and each run they score is worth two.

After choosing to field first in the final, India successfully covered the chase in just 12 overs while losing three wickets, limiting Nepal to 114 runs for five wickets.

Mahantesh G. Kivadasannavar, chairman of the Cricket Association for the Blind in India, told the BBC that the win would inspire more women and other people with disabilities to play cricket and other sports.

Players who had overcome tremendous obstacles to secure a position in the squad were part of the Indian team. Many of them have only recently learned the sport; they come from small-town hostels, rural families, and villages.

At the inaugural T20 World Cup, blind Indian women cricket players want to make history.

“I hope our victory can inspire many more like us,” Simu Das, a bowler from a small town in the northeastern province of Assam, told the BBC.

According to Mr. Kivadasannavar, the crew was given a “grand welcome” in Chennai on Monday morning, and a second ceremony is scheduled for the Bengaluru airport later in the afternoon.

Legendary cricket players and politicians expressed their happiness at the win.

Federal Minister Amit Shah referred to it as a “historic day for Indian sports” and remarked, “We are proud of your accomplishment and our Tiranga [tricolor] flutters higher today. Your success reflects your determination and commitment to bring honors to the country.

“Some victories remind us that no challenge is ever too big when talent refuses to be limited,” ex-India women’s cricket captain Mithali Raj wrote on X.

Yuvraj Singh, a former cricket player from India, wrote: “Champions demonstrating what is possible with unwavering bravery and skill.” The entire nation is proud of you.

On November 11, the World Cup got underway in Delhi. After that, the location shifted to Karnataka in the south, and subsequently to Sri Lanka.
