Punjab government releases Rs 332 crore to empower Gram Panchayats, improve roads, sanitation, and health, ensuring transparent rural development.
A historic sum of Rs 332 crore was recently allocated by the Punjab government to provide the state’s rural development a fresh focus and boost. Because of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s innovative leadership and his steadfast dedication to the state’s rural population, this significant decision has been made. The money has been sent straight to the accounts of over 13,000 gram panchayats, 153 panchayat samitis, and 22 Zilla Parishads in the state, Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema stated in Chandigarh. Not only does this step demonstrate administrative transparency, but it also ensures that the development work will go promptly and without any delays, making the change evident at the ground level.

Panchayats have been given complete autonomy in choosing development projects thanks to the Rs 156 crore that has been given to them as Untied Funds out of the entire sum. The panchayats will now have the ability to prioritize energy projects, establish community structures, improve the drinking water system, or develop roads in their village based on their own particular needs. However, the government has set aside a total of Rs 176 crore as a tide fund, favoring sanitation and health in rural areas. The funds would be utilized for crucial projects including waste management, sanitation, building public restrooms, and keeping villages open defecation-free (ODF) under strict guidelines. The Punjab government’s perspective demonstrates that development is not limited to constructing brick and mortar structures; it also aims to establish a hygienic and salubrious environment, both of which will serve to improve the villagers’ quality of life.
Now that the Punjab government has taken this special initiative, the Gram Panchayats will have the autonomy to carry out the infrastructural and general development work that their region needs. The first tranche of Rs 1.76 lakh for direct development works has now been made available to all gram panchayats. The government has yet to complete this task, but it also intends to transfer a further Rs 334 crore by the end of the year or in January 2026 as the second installment. This will guarantee a total of Rs 3.52 lakh each gram panchayat in a year, which will help spread the word of success to the state’s more isolated regions.
In line with the people’s desires, the Finance Minister underlined that better basic facilities will be available the more active the Panchayat. The plan is viewed as a revolution in the development of vibrant Punjab and resilient villages. All important elements, including roads, water, sports, education, health, agriculture, and electricity, will receive equal priority in rural areas, the administration has promised. The government has taken a balanced approach to district-by-district allocation, taking into account population density and need. The districts of Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, and Ludhiana have received the most funding. The amounts released to Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, and Gurdaspur are around Rs 33.40 crore, Rs 28.51 crore, and Rs 27.64 crore, respectively. In addition, other districts such as Sangrur, Patiala, Jalandhar, Ferozepur, Fazilka, Moga, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, Sri Muktsar Sahib, and Tarn Taran have been given sufficient funding based on their circumstances. This is to guarantee that every village is empowered and that no district is falling behind in the race for development.
An important step in fortifying the Panchayati Raj system is this Punjabi government initiative. The funds were distributed at three levels: Gram Panchayat (70%), Panchayat Samiti (20%), and Zilla Parishad (10%) in a 70:20:10 ratio.
