Jasprit Bumrah 5-wicket haul helps India bowl out South Africa for 159 on Day 1 of the 1st Test; India ends day at 37/1 with Rahul & Sundar at crease.

As India defeated South Africa for 159 on the first day of the first Test, here Friday, Jasprit Bumrah transformed a rare four-spinner gamble into his own stage with a captivating display of seam, swing, and control. India’s pace sensation made the ball talk the loudest on a pitch that attracted pre-match criticism for looking dry, forcing the team to field four spinners for the first time since 2012. He returned an incredible 14-2-27-5, his 16th five-wicket haul in 96 innings.

Bumrah’s masterpiece spanned only two sessions, as South Africa’s innings lasted just four hours and thirteen minutes after they decided to bat. They went from a dominant 57 for no loss in 10 overs to losing all 10 wickets for just 102 runs in the next 45 overs.

After an opening stand of more than fifty in men’s Test matches since their readmission, it is South Africa’s second-lowest total. The lowest was 130 in their second innings following a 52-run opening partnership against India in the 2018 Cape Town Test.

After Yashasvi Jaiswal (12) pulled Marco Jansen onto his stumps while playing near his body, a determined KL Rahul (13 batting from 59 balls) and Washington Sundar (six batting; 38 balls) remained firm at the crease as India finished the day at 37 for one in 20 overs.

As they reduced the lead to 122 runs in front of a sizable Eden crowd of more than 36,000, the pair were unhurried on a surface with spice and varying bounce.

South Africa utilized five bowlers and packed the bat with close-in fielders in an attempt to make a late breakthrough as the light waned. Rahul and Sundar, however, avoided more harm by being composed and confident throughout the last overs.

South Africa appeared ready for a major score following Aiden Markram’s (31 off 48 balls; 5×4, 1×6) and Ryan Rickelton’s (23 off 22b; 4×4) quick opening partnership. However, they were missing their top pacer Kagiso Rabada because of a rib injury.

After twenty-three dot balls, Markram started with a straight drive and a fluid cover drive. He then punished Axar Patel twice and made a brilliant late cut past backward point.

Additionally, when the run-rate surged above five runs per over, he hit Axar for a wristy six over midwicket. India was further frustrated by Rickelton’s erratic 22 off 23 (4×4) at the other end.

However, in his maiden spell, which read 7-4-9-2, Bumrah from the Clubhouse end flipped the morning upside down by taking two wickets in five balls over the course of consecutive overs shortly before the drinks break in the first session.

Minutes later, a short-of-length delivery leaped spitefully to take Markram’s glove, and a ball of 140 kmph straightened late to uproot Rickelton’s off stump. The disparity in bounce summed up the pitch’s unpredictable nature.

The second session ended with a reverse swing that split open the tail, and he came back after lunch to trap Tony de Zorzi (24), in front, with one that skidded through.

Three balls after Simon Harmer’s stumps were sent cartwheeling, Keshav Maharaj was pinned plumb in front.

Siraj and Kuldeep strengthen their grip.

In the second session, Mohammed Siraj (2/47) provided a fast double blow, dismissing Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen in four balls in his tenth over after letting 34 runs slip from six overs in the previous session.

After being hit pad-then-bat, Verreynne (16) destroyed South Africa’s final review, and a ball of reverse length zipped in to breach Jansen.

Kuldeep Yadav (2/29) contributed by taking the crucial wicket of captain Temba Bavuma. He was cleverly caught at leg slip by Dhruv Jurel and then removed a small-looking Wiaan Mulder (24).

Following Bavuma’s and the openers’ early defeats, Tony de Zorzi and Mulder attempted to stabilize the innings with cautious batting.

Although Mulder appeared compact against India’s four-pronged spin onslaught and put forth more than fifty balls of effort, he lost concentration fifteen minutes into the second session.

South Africa’s problems were exacerbated when he tried to escape with a reverse sweep against Kuldeep but failed miserably and was trapped leg before wicket. This crucial dismissal set the stage for Bumrah and Siraj’s twin strike.

Corbin Bosch was fired by Axar Patel (1/21) during tea as India continued to apply constant pressure.
