Air Marshal AP Singh Set to Become New Chief of Indian Air Force
In a significant development for the Indian Air Force (IAF), Air Marshal Amar Preet Singh has been appointed as the next Chief of the Air Force. He is scheduled to assume command on September 30, 2024, when the current Chief, Air Chief Marshal Vivek Ram Chaudhari, retires after a distinguished career.
A seasoned fighter pilot, Air Marshal AP Singh brings with him extensive experience in various key roles within the IAF. Currently serving as the Vice Chief of the Air Force, his promotion comes at a time when the IAF is modernizing its fleet and focusing on indigenous fighter jets like the Tejas.
During his tenure, Air Marshal Singh played a crucial role in test-flying the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas. In fact, just days ago, he flew the Tejas at the multi-nation exercise ‘Tarang Shakti’ held in Jodhpur. This highlights his hands-on approach and deep involvement in enhancing the operational capabilities of the IAF’s homegrown assets. The Ministry of Defence confirmed that he was also the Project Director (Flight Test) at the National Flight Test Centre, where he was responsible for testing the Tejas aircraft during its development.
With nearly four decades of service, Air Marshal Singh’s career has been marked by numerous important assignments. Commissioned into the fighter pilot stream in December 1984, he quickly rose through the ranks. He has held a variety of command positions, demonstrating his leadership in both operational and administrative roles.
Among his notable commands, he led an operational fighter squadron and commanded a frontline air base along India’s borders, showcasing his capabilities in managing both men and machines in challenging environments. Additionally, he served as the Commander of the IAF’s Central Command, headquartered in Prayagraj, overseeing crucial air operations in central India.
Air Marshal Singh’s expertise also extends beyond India’s borders. He led the MiG-29 jet upgrade project management team in Moscow, Russia, underscoring his technical prowess and international experience. His contributions to the IAF’s modernization, especially in the context of fighter aircraft, are widely recognized.
The appointment of Air Marshal AP Singh as the next Chief of Air Staff follows a tradition of leadership from the Sikh community. Previous Chiefs like Marshal of the Air Force Arjan Singh, Air Chief Marshal Dilbagh Singh, and Air Chief Marshal BS Dhanoa also hailed from the same community, a fact that highlights the diversity and inclusivity of the Indian Armed Forces.
As the new Chief, Air Marshal Singh will be responsible for steering the IAF through a critical period of modernization, focusing on self-reliance and indigenous capabilities. His vast experience, both in flying and project management, will be pivotal in ensuring that the Air Force remains a formidable force in the region.
