Karan Johar reveals why he sold 50% of Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla for ₹1,000 crore and how he rebuilt his father’s film legacy with Apoorva Mehta.

Karan Johar sold his 50% stake in Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla for Rs 1,000 crore last year. The producing firm is a legacy left by his father, Yash Johar. Recently, the filmmaker stated that he has no regrets about selling the stock and pondered on how he rebuilt the firm from the ground up when his father died. Though he proudly referred to himself as the union’s creative wellspring, he also believed that he was not the appropriate person to be in the negotiation room. He also said that he always sacrificed more and received less.

In a recent interview with Curly Tales, Karan Johar admitted, “My business sense is not the sharpest. You may not believe me, but this is true. So, Apoorva Mehta, the CEO of my company and my best friend, we grew up together, attended the same school and college. He’s the driving force behind Dharma, Dharmatic, Dharma 2.0, DCA, and everything else we do. “He is the business brain, and I am the creative source.”

The filmmaker also remembers his father’s death. Johar added, “My father, who died in 2004, was a film producer. He taught me all of my life mantras, ideas, and all I know about working in the film industry. But after he died, I was a little adrift; I don’t have siblings, and there wasn’t anyone who could assist me run this. So I called Apoorva, who had quit his job and business in London and returned to India. Since then, we’ve spent 20 years working together, turning Dharma Productions into what it is today.”
