New Delhi:  In the third ODI against Australia, Shreyas Iyer hurt himself during fielding and had to be admitted to the intensive care unit at Sydney Hospital. Despite the BCCI’s confirmation that the cricket player had sustained a splenic laceration injury, he experienced internal bleeding and had to be taken to the hospital. Since the emphasis is still on the cricket player’s recuperation from the injury, there is currently no defined schedule for Iyer’s return. Here are five examples of horrifying accidents that cricket players have suffered while playing:

1. Mark Boucher (2012)

Mark Boucher, a wicketkeeper for South Africa, had a serious eye injury during a tour match against Somerset in July 2012, which led to the sudden end of his career. The injury prompted him to retire immediately because he was challenging legspinner Imran Tahir at the moment. With 999 dismissals at the end of his career, Boucher lost the opportunity to become the first cricket player to ever reach 1000 dismissals.

2. The 1962 film Nari Contractor.

In 1962, West Indies fast bowler Charlie Griffith struck India’s Nari Contractor on the head, leaving him gravely ill. A scorching bouncer hit the contractor, who dropped to his haunches and clutched his head. His nose and ears began to bleed quickly, and the bleeding persisted long after he was taken to the hospital. The contractor had two surgeries during this time after regaining consciousness six days after the impact. He also received blood donations from Bapu Nadkarni, Polly Umrigar, Chandu Borde, and opposing captain Frank Worrell.

3. In 1999, Jason Gillespie

Jason Gillespie collided with Steve Waugh while attempting to make a catch during the 1999 Test match between Australia and Sri Lanka in Kandy, breaking his leg. After several tests, it was determined that the fast bowler had broken his leg and needed to be taken off the field by his colleagues. In the meantime, Waugh suffered a broken nose in the event, and the two cricket players still get goosebumps from it 26 years later.

4. (2000) Saba Karim

During the 2000 Asia Cup in Dhaka, cricketer Saba Karim’s promising career was cut suddenly as he was maintaining wickets. Against Bangladesh, Karim suffered a career-ending eye injury after Anil Kumble’s delivery struck his right eye after it ricocheted off the batsman’s foot. His eye injury required surgery, but he never fully recovered, which led to the early end of his career.

5. The 2014 Craig Kieswetter

After the ball passed through Craig Kieswetter’s helmet grille, the career of the talented cricket player from England came to an end. He suffered a fractured eye socket and a broken nose. His eye had to be operated on due to the accident, and even though he tried several times, his eyesight never entirely recovered, forcing him to leave the sport at the young age of 27.
