Launched in May 2016, PM-Ujjwala Yojana provides LPG to rural, poor households, replacing traditional fuels. UP leads with 1.86 crore connections so far.

Lucknow: At Lok Bhavan on Wednesday, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will distribute two complimentary LPG refills to mothers and sisters as part of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PM-Ujjwala). This initiative will provide festive respite to 1.86 crore women in Uttar Pradesh. The initiative is indicative of the state government’s dedication to the welfare of women, economic assistance for underprivileged families, and the provision of pure fuel.

The PM-Ujjwala Yojana, which was initiated in May 2016, offers LPG connections to rural and underprivileged households. This initiative replaces traditional fuels such as wood, coal, and bovine dung cakes, thereby enhancing the health and safety of kitchens. Uttar Pradesh has been a pioneering state in the implementation of the scheme, with 18.6 million families already receiving connections.

The new plan will distribute two free LPG supplies annually in two phases: October–December 2025 and January–March 2026. The state will allocate Rs 1,500 crore for this initiative. The initial phase is being implemented by Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, and it is expected to benefit 1.23 crore Aadhaar-verified beneficiaries. An advance of ₹346.34 crore has been given to ensure the smooth distribution of the funds.

The subsidy will be credited to the Aadhaar-linked bank accounts of all beneficiaries within 3–4 days after they purchase 14.2 kg cylinders at the current rate. Additionally, individuals who possess 5 kg cylinders or possess only one connection are eligible. SMS alerts, an authentication app, additional workstations at distributor points, and public awareness through banners and camps are all being used to support ongoing Aadhaar verification campaigns, which are intended to include all beneficiaries.

Implementation will be overseen by state- and district-level committees, and consumer complaints will be resolved through a grievance redressal system. Periodic examinations will be conducted by the Weights and Measures Department to ensure that the full 14.2 kg of gas is present in the cylinders.

This initiative offers economic respite in the face of increasing petroleum prices, encourages the use of clean fuels in rural areas, and contributes to a healthier environment, providing a brighter Diwali for millions of women and their families.
