In the midst of current political turmoil and protests by Generation Z in the nation, the Nepali film “Anjila” has received an official recommendation for the 98th Academy Awards’ International Feature Film category. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ selection committee made the news on Thursday.

This year, two Nepali films, “Anjila” and “Gunyu Cholo,” submitted applications for consideration. The Milan Chams-directed film “Anjila” eventually prevailed.

The inspirational true story of Anjila Tumbapo Subba, the captain and star goalie of Nepal’s national women’s football team, is told in the film “Anjila.” Her journey from the constraints of her home to captaining the national team is depicted in the film. It demonstrates the difficulties she encountered and the tenacity that enabled her to succeed.

Interestingly, Anjila plays herself in the movie, while her parents are portrayed by well-known actors Srijana Subba and Dayahang Rai.

The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, will host the 98th Academy Awards on March 15, 2026. On December 16, 2025, the first 15-film shortlist for the International Feature category will be released. Additionally, the final nominees’ results will be released on January 22, 2026.
