Chandigarh :Punjab Finance Minister Advocate Harpal Singh Cheema has assured sugarcane farmers that their pending dues from private mills will be released soon. Speaking after a detailed meeting with farmer representatives in Chandigarh on Monday, Cheema emphasized that the state government is committed to protecting the interests of the farming community.
Assurance to Sugarcane Farmers
During the meeting, Cheema acknowledged the hardships faced by sugarcane growers due to delays in payment. He underlined that the Punjab Government, under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, is actively working to clear the state’s share of the payment for cane procured by private mills.
“The Punjab Government is committed to ensuring that our farmers receive timely payments for their hard work,” Cheema said. The assurance drew gratitude from farmer unions, which had been pressing for immediate action on the dues.
Farmer leaders present included Balwinder Singh Raju, President of the Majha Kisan Sangarsh Committee, and Jangvir Singh Chauhan, President of the Doaba Kisan Committee. They welcomed the government’s response and highlighted the urgent need for financial stability among cultivators.
Engagement with Other Associations
Cheema’s office also hosted representatives of several organizations on the same day, reflecting the government’s outreach to diverse groups. Meetings were held with:
- Gram Panchayat Jal Supply Pump Operators Association
- Punjab Police Corona Warriors
- Freedom Fighters Uttradikari Sanstha
- Danga Pirdit Welfare Society
The Finance Minister listened to their concerns and directed departments to address genuine issues promptly. Leaders such as Gurbaz Singh, President of the Punjab Police Corona Warriors, and Beant Singh, President of the Pump Operators Association, participated actively.
Representatives from the Freedom Fighters’ descendants’ group, including Chittin Singh Mansa and Major Singh, raised issues of recognition and welfare. Meanwhile, Surjit Singh of the Danga Pirdit Welfare Society urged the government to resolve compensation-related demands of riot-affected families.

Cheema reiterated that the Punjab Government is adopting a people-first approach, addressing grievances across sectors. He stressed that timely resolution of farmers’ and citizens’ demands remains a top priority.
“From farmers to frontline workers and social welfare groups, every voice matters,” Cheema said, adding that the administration will continue to engage directly with stakeholders.
