Punjab Schools to Reopen After Floods
Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Bains has announced the reopening of schools, colleges, and universities across the state after days of disruption caused by heavy floods. The minister shared detailed guidelines on the reopening process, stressing student safety and post-flood inspections.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Bains confirmed that all government, private, and aided educational institutions will resume normal operations from September 9. However, he clarified that if any school or college remains affected by flood damage, the Deputy Commissioner of the district will have the authority to decide on temporary closures.
The minister stressed that safety will remain the top priority. “It is mandatory for the management of private schools to ensure that school buildings and classrooms are completely safe,” he wrote. Institutions must certify that infrastructure is secure before allowing students to return.
September 8: Cleaning and Safety Inspections
The Education Department has designated September 8 exclusively for cleaning and inspections. All government schools will remain closed for students on that day. Teachers, however, are required to be present in schools and assist in the clean-up operations.
Cleaning will be carried out with the help of School Management Committees (SMCs), panchayats, municipal councils, and local corporations. This collaborative effort aims to restore safe learning environments quickly.
Teachers will also be responsible for inspecting classrooms, furniture, and building structures. If any issues or damages are found, they must be reported immediately to the Deputy Commissioner and the Engineering Department for urgent action.
Resumption of Normal Classes from September 9
From September 9, schools and colleges will reopen fully for students. The government expects all institutions to strictly adhere to safety protocols and remain vigilant for any post-flood risks.
Education Minister Bains emphasized that reopening schools is critical to restoring normalcy in students’ lives. The prolonged closure due to floods had raised concerns over learning disruptions. Authorities are working to minimize the impact and ensure a safe return to classes.
