Rescue Efforts Begin After Cloudbursts in Uttarakhand
A series of cloudbursts struck Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts in Uttarakhand, triggering flash floods and landslides that left several families stranded. The affected areas include Bareth Dungar Tok in Buskedar tehsil of Rudraprayag and Deval in Chamoli.
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep concern and confirmed that rescue operations were being carried out on a war footing. Taking to X (formerly Twitter), he wrote that instructions had been issued to the Disaster Secretary and District Magistrates to coordinate efforts effectively.

“I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all,” the Chief Minister said in his message.
Relief teams, including local administration and disaster response units, have been mobilized to reach remote villages cut off due to debris flows.
Missing Persons and Property Damage Reported
Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tewari confirmed that two people are missing after the incident in Deval. Several animals were also reported buried under debris, while continuous heavy rainfall blocked major roads in the region.
“Relief teams have reached the site despite road closures. Our immediate focus is on tracing the missing persons and ensuring medical aid,” Tewari said.
In Rudraprayag, the District Administration reported damage to homes and infrastructure. Authorities confirmed that teams from the National Highways, PWD, and PMGSY were working round the clock to clear blocked routes. Alternative paths are being identified to transport relief material and rescue personnel.
Alaknanda River Nears Danger Mark
Heavy rainfall has raised the water level of the Alaknanda River in Srinagar close to the danger mark, heightening the risk of floods. Local officials have urged residents living near vulnerable riverbanks to remain alert.
In Tehri Garhwal, a separate cloudburst was reported in Genwali Bhilangana. District Disaster Officer Brijesh Bhatt said no casualties occurred but acknowledged possible damage to private and public property. Revenue teams, along with health, electricity, water, and veterinary units, have been deployed to assess and mitigate the situation.
Administration Issues Alerts and Evacuations
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for the region. Authorities fear further cloudbursts and landslides as rains continue.
Chamoli Police posted on social media urging residents near sliding zones to shift to safer locations. Relief camps were set up in Kulsari, equipped with food and essential supplies. “We request people not to take risks and cooperate with authorities during evacuation,” the police statement read.
State Response and Ongoing Challenges
Chief Minister Dhami stressed that his office remains in constant touch with district authorities. He reiterated that restoring roads, ensuring communication, and rescuing those stranded are the state’s top priorities.
However, continuous rainfall has made rescue work difficult. Remote terrain and recurring landslides are slowing down the deployment of heavy machinery. Authorities are relying on alternative routes to transport relief supplies where direct access is blocked.
Disaster experts have warned that climate change is contributing to increasing frequency of extreme rainfall events in the Himalayan region, making such natural disasters more common.

The state government has urged locals and tourists to avoid unnecessary travel to hilly areas until conditions stabilize. Meanwhile, relief and rehabilitation work is expected to continue for the coming days, with special attention on Rudraprayag, Chamoli, and Tehri Garhwal.
